Check your firewall especially if you have a third party one. Make sure you typed the server address right like "connect quake.shmack.net" for instance.
There aren't too many things that can be going on.
For the time being, I'd recommend using DarkPlaces for the purposes of trying to get online (if it runs for you) and then once the problem is solved you can use whatever.
If you continue to have the problem, post back.Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

Ok, then here come the questions ...
1) Are you using Windows XP or Vista or something else?
2) Are you using cable or DSL?
3) Are you using a router?
If XP, click start Start -> Run and type "cmd" and press enter.
On the black screen, type "ipconfig" and press enter. Click the top left DOS-like icon of the window and it will have things like Restore, Move, Size ... look down and click "Edit -> Select All" and then "Edit-> Copy" and paste it here.Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages.
