  • Speedball's Pros & Cons

    First off, I'm not starting this thread because i despise speedball its an awesomely fun mod by far and brings much attention to whatever server will have it.

    But there's a few things I would change or add and everyone else is free to comment also!

    Below is a list of Speeball related "enhancements or improvements" I've personally felt Speedball could do better by integrating these ideas.

    1.Waiting time to get into a Speedball game if you weren't lucky enough to catch the beginning is horrible! I've found myself waiting in line to play for up to 20 minutes, which ultimately makes me bored of waiting and choose to play on a standard CAX server. I can't think of a better system to get OBS players into the game but its irritating just watching a speedball game when you expect to play.

    2. Ball throwing distance. While I somewhat agree with the distance you can throw the ball it seems like it should go roughly 1 to 2 game units further.

    3.The ball handler goes the same speed as the rest of the players? Really this makes for pretty intense games when ball gets basically held hostage by both teams because neither can get the ball to their side of the court. I'd definitely like to see a speed increase by atleast 5% for the ball handler.

    Con: unlucky spawns,

    no speedball maps, except the pz map, where is the dload ROok, the map i made had equal goals, and was big enough for 2v2, the spawns just needed to be fixed,

      re-spawn time sucks, the whole five or so seconds i caress my keys and buttons due to the intensity and it makes me spin around really fast when i spawn finally

        1) I don't know what you really mean by this? I havent really waited at all that much. I guess it doesnt bug me though because I play a lot of DM and you wait for those to start.


        2) I think the ball throwing distance is perfect. When you can throw the ball from the bottum of pent floor in DM3 through the pent window I don't see why you'd want it to go any further.

        3) The game would go way to fast if the ball handler were faster. It already is hard enough to stop the ball handler if they know what they are doing.

        These are just my opinions from playing it. Other then getting more maps for it I don't see why there should be any change to the mod.

          i agree

          The 5 second respawn makes it more challenging.. I really don't think it's that bad... And why does the ball need to be bigger?

            I think the distance and speed is good for dm3. If there was a larger map, then we could move faster. The ball handler can't go any faster now because the map is too small, there's no chance people would catch him.

            As you get better at speedball people will realize the ball carrier has to go slower, or play a larger map.

                I think these are the main issues that need to be addressed for this mod right now:

                1) Maps. We all know DM3 is not balanced and is more favorable for the red team. I would like to see some standard CTF maps added to the server. Not the CTF mod but just the maps. They are symetrical bases and should make playing the game even more fun on an even ground.

                2) AMMO - Rage.quakeone.com has 40 of each ammo. Sometimes you can go minutes without dying to the point where u are going around with a shotgun trying to get someone to kill you. I dont know if this mod can over write the server defaults but it would be nice to see at least 200 of everything and 50 rocks/gls.

                3) Instant Spawning - There is a bug that i can duplicate and i have seen others do it as well. When you die, if you click the fire key and press other movement buttons rapidly, you can re-spawn on the exact same spot you died (after the 5-10 seconds wait) but this can be a huge advantage. I can sometimes spawn in the base we are trying to score and get the ball and score, after just dying.

                  Overlooked effect. I didnt anticipate people idling to CC in. Most often the mode gets spawned with the majority who voted yes to play.

                  holding the ball with axe and issuing imnpulse 1-8 will drop the ball.
                  But pressing +jump or +attack will turbo pass the ball. These values could be admin configurable.

                  The ball handler runs 20% slower than the rest of the players. This could be admin configurable. But really under 10% and u get into wall hugging issues.

                    BSP is a great map editor anyone can learn to bang out a map in like 20 hours work.

                    The mod has an option that the admin can set the ammo behavior to REGEN, means your ammo regens as you carry the weapon in hand and dont fire. Other guns in the backpack do not regen.
                    Also in the main cfg you can set ammo for any limit up to 15384 for each weapon, except the axe.

                    If you have discovered a way to coordinate your spawn in lieu of an exploit in the mod, this is nothing worse than rocket jumps, or strafe wiggling. I can fix it but if it adds to strategy then why remove it?

                          As the resident Speedball Pro, I'll give my oppinions..

                          The mod itself is AWESOME. I would leave EVERYTHING the same except change/fix one thing, the spawn bug.

                          The ball size is perfect. It does not need to be larger or smaller. The glowing dots help you see where it is, and if your team locs like they should be, you'll always know the general area the ball is in.

                          The respawn time is absolutely perfect. You have the advantage on defense as a ball carrier cannot shoot at you, defend your base while your teammates come to help. If your loc'ing properly and your team is smart, they will have defenses set up BEFORE the ball gets to your goal. Anticipate the balls path.

                          The start time is perfect. Run your ass to the ball spawn point. This is SPEED ball.

                          Ammo I think is perfect as well. Save your ammo, if you run out, well too bad. Use what you have left and make your stand. I find the only time I'm running out of ammo is when I'm making a defensive stand at the base. It adds to the fun of it.

                          Throw distance is PERFECT!!!! Jump if you want to really throw it. Otherwise just toss it normally.

                          Ball carrier speed, PERFECT!!!

                          It would be nice to see more maps, speed style maps, not hangup maps.
