  • Latency issues

So about a month or so ago my ping to a couple of the eastcoast servers jumped from 80 to 110. Now I can manage 80 but 110 has too much of a sluggishness for me.

So I went out on a limb and called my DSL provider and had them test my connection. I figured it wasn't directly a change my ISP did but a change in routing down the road to the servers I am having trouble with. So they tested and of course they ended up being infallible as per usual.

My question for you dsl experts is there anyway to improve latency? I do understand it's a matter of the routing and distance but would a larger downrate help with latency?

No, ping is just the routing to the server from your house. I went from 1.5 to 3.0mbs and ping was the same. Now at 10mbs sync I still get 85 for Cali, but sub 20 to chicago/dallas.

Yeah that's what I thought, guess I'll look into switching to Cable since AAA is in the same city as me and gets 80 to speak and chi still.

If your connection uses interleaving to reduce data loss (better error-correction) you might see if it is possible to switch to fastpath (Higher chance of data loss but should result in lower latency). You may need to consult your ISP on the matter if there is no way to make this switch yourself.. (some more explaining and even more)

That sounds like it would improve bandwidth. I doubt that it would improve latency. Unless the thing is waiting for a response saying whether or not the packet was received before sending the next packet (which would effectively double your latency), I don't see how it could.

                Wiki page on interleaving..
Use of interleaving techniques increases latency. This is because the entire interleaved block must be received before the packets can be decoded.
Btw, I know that sir henry switched his ADSL from interleaving to fast-path and it reduced his ping in quake from 60-ish to 40-ish..
(Obviously not guaranteed to make a difference, as there are numerous things that could influence latency, but I just figured I'd point out that it might help)

hmm, i was thinking if it was cable and u lived around apartments that it could be because of that, but since its a phone line, thats not the case...

is your connection wireless ? is it secure ? if someone else is connected to it, that could slow u down, like everytime the wife was on facebook....

hey rabbit get Shaw and if u have any problems with signal drops b/c u live in an densely populated area u need not worry just get one of these.

U only need this if you'r signal drops.

so is this interleaving thing a dsl only deal?
