  • Why cant I start or join a multiplayer game?

Why is it no matter what client me or my friend use we cant connect to each other no matter who is the server and who is joining.
    tried ezquake,glquake,fteqw.

can connect to dedicated server games no problem,

but for the life of me, i cant connect to him when he creates a game or he cant to me when i create a game.

    we both windows 7.
i have no windows firewall running or any 3rd party firewall running.

think u need the old ipx port for quake 1 for lan-lan less u cheat,

run a dedicated server on any client, or your mod of choice.

Then tab out of it an then both connect to it.

But i ain't setup a lan in ages, so if that doesn't work (ask others).

For dedicated serv i think with most clients u just create shortcut -dedicated 16 to end of exe and run it.

    Yeah -dedicated 16

trick works, just you won't FIND yourself in the search u will have to type ur actual ip.

I cheated an typed the loopback addy 127.0.0.1

it failed to connect then above me, it said my ip...

    So i tried again.

    Then it worked.

    lol.

windows7's firewall will by default block incoming connections, but if you're sure that its disabled then okay.
windows7 no longer supports dialup, so any internet connection you have with it is typically provided by some router.
said router will not automatically forward all packets.
fte and ezquake listen on port 27500 by default, glquake listens on port 26000, but will likely have additional issues so I cannot recommend glquake.
Whoever is hosting will need to log into their router (try http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1) and configure it to forward inbound UDP packets for 27500 to their machine.
If you type 'status' at the host's console in either fte or ezquake it'll show an IP, if it shows '192.168.X.X' or '10.X.X.X' then you definitely need to reconfigure some router because those are not public IPs - google for some site to show you your public IP.

if you don't have such a router, then I have no idea how you get your internet connection.

also set the deathmatch or coop cvar (or just start a _multiplayer_ game via the menu) or you'll get some message about the server being full.

the cheat i showed, will still work.

Only difference is you need to grab your ip.

Who ever hosts the server by putting -dedicated 16

in their shortcut to their client,

          just google "myip"

An copy paste it to your friend, and connect to it yourself with another shortcut that isn't -dedicated 16.

An downside is whoever the host is, will have like 0 ping.

So you may want to use the simulated lag ping +XXX numbers.

          ping +100

An whatnot to make it more fair.

You need to open ports to host a game server. Quake officially uses port 26000, but in actuality you need to put the host computer on the DMZ to get it to work properly, unless you're running a Darkplaces server, in which case forwarding just port 26000 will work. For example, I manually configured my Quake server machine's network IP to be 192.168.1.22, and I went into my router's settings to set the DMZ to be at 192.168.1.22.

            e|------------------------0---------------
            B|---------------0^1----------------1----
            G|---------------2------2------0^2-------
            D|---------------2-------2--2-------------
            A|---------------0------------------------
            E|----------------------------------------

they indicated they weren't behind a firewall/router, so i doubt that would need to be done.

windows has a built in one, but, i doubt it would interfer with it. If it did, you can access it by right clicking network/properties/firewall or go into control panel / firewall.

An just let quake accept incoming connections, though i still doubt you'd have to do that.

              Course i ain't tried, so i dunno.

Ok, i haven't played Quake multiplayer in about four years and I'm trying to get back into it. But when I try to play, i goto a server (for example: quake.shmack.net) and it says "couldn't load maps dm1.bsp". It may also say dm2. Now, aren't those the standard maps that come with the game? I don't understand why it won't let me play. I can chat with others but I can't play. What can I do? I would really appreciate the answer because I'm itchin to get back into the game. Thanks, Strife.

You should have these maps, unless you have a shareware version of quake.

Alternatively u can grab the new proquake client or any other newer client down on the right side of the page on quakeone.com and it will usually auto-download maps from the server for you.

                  alternatively: Index of /qrack/maps

You can download the maps you need there using CTRL+F3 "mapname" enter, and download them into id1, make folder "maps" in id1, and try connecting if it fails rename folder to "map" i forget how it is in the pak1.pak.

                  Heh.

~Cheers. "id1" folders inside ur quake folder.
