  • PainKeep Anywhere?

I somehow in my Archiving endeavors came across "PAINKEEP". For some reason it led me to think it was a SP and MP. Anyhow- who wants to buy my book or read on how I came across Painkeep?? lol NOBODY!
Well- I have looked online and failed to find a active server.. Then I remembered Quakeone.com

Anyhow know where or IF its being hosted?

    Happy Easter!!

      Hi Uzi,

You probably know this already but, just in case, the original Quake 1 Painkeep mod is a client side multiplayer mod (rather than just server side) that had new weapons and maps not widely available at the time in normal Quake DM. As far as I know there are no computer generated opponents so there's no single Player "game" in the original mod. PainKeep goes back to Deathmatch's original emphasis, in other words make other players die horribly.

If you haven't got it already you will need to download the appropriate files to play. There are a number of sources for this but here would be a good starting point.

Personally, I found it a really fun mod to play and it's a pity there aren't more people willing to give it a try. It can really make your night to send a gravity well up on a lift to "greet" someone camping at the top of it

Much kudos, as always, to Polarite for putting the server up. As far as I am aware, it's one of the only netquake Painkeep servers in existence. If I can dig out the access details, when I get a few mins I'll try and connect to the server and add the 18 "nothing" maps on top of the regular ones if Pol hasn't done it already.

      Hope this helps

      Monty

I realize this is a netquale-oriented site but I do have a QW Painkeep server up at:
        /connect weenieville.net.

Many bugs fixed, tons of maps, vweps, farts that do damage. What more could you ask for? My running collection of source is here:
Index of /pksource (Be awesome if someone wanted to port it back to netquake.)

Forgive me, I'm a QuakeC newbie but what would this entail? Given the features you've added it could be even more fun to play but what would one have to do to accomplish this and revert it back to its orginal netquake platform whilst retaining your updates?

          Kind regards

In reality I couldn't code if my life depended on it. I did learn to compile it and fiddle with weapon settings and such some 5 years ago, had a friend who did know Quake C do the stuff I couldn't do (vweps rock), plus he fixed a ton of bugs that had been there since 1997. Simply being able to toss traps, turrets, and wells with a decent way of aiming was one of the best things Niborevoli added to this code.

I sent him a link to this thread via email, hopefully he has an answer to your question, I certainly don't!

              Hey guys,

Most of the features and fixes should port back with little effort.

The long story is: Painkeep was done for netquake first circa 97, then ported to QW. The port seems to have been somewhat hasty; a few things broke, and others could never work (the cool damage skins). Then we've been adding (mostly small) features and fixing bugs for the last few years.

Anyway, the broken netquake stuff I fixed in the QW version you don't need to back port. There's also a few other QW specific things that don't need to port (I fine-tuned some of the broadcast messages). I think if you do a "diff" between the files, it will be easy to port 95% of the stuff back. I'm not sure if the vweap support will port easily or not - Can't think why it wouldn't at first, but thats probably the technically hardest feature.

FYI, I maintain a "plain" version of PK/QW with just minor fixes and features, doesn't have the vweaps, voting, or excessive farting in SH's version. Possibly easier to use for the porting since it has few modifications.

              Hope that helps.

                Hi Niborevoli

Thanks for taking the time to come back to me. And thanks to SH as well
I'd like to give this a try in the hope I can learn a little more QC. I have frikqcc-gui.exe which I have used to compile other mods and some humble attempts of my own at modding, but is there something more suitable you could recommend that's known to work well with compiling PK?

In the interim I'll download the latest "PK QW" source from SH's site, a fresh copy of the "PK NQ" source, and start working through the files, If there's any additional pointers you could give to a newbie such as myself it would be much appreciated.

                Thanks ...again

For the record: There is no such thing as "excessive farting".

                      Code:
                      burrito_mode\
                      pk666_qwsrc_source_doc\
                      zany\
                      FYI
I run 3 modes... burrito mode, zany mode, and normal. In QW /sv_progsname filename.dat at server console runs the dat file you want the server to use.

Burrito mode is self explanatory, zany mode is increased fart damage and beartraps are instagib. On QW the server exe I use is hacked for another mod so it can handle craploads of entities, not sure how you can workaround that in netquake. It is needed especially with nib's cool tweaks of the well physics.

I can post the QW server exe if you want it for testing.

Another thing that just occurred to me... a couple years ago a fella named Doc, who maintains the Thunderwalker CTF code (I think*), noticed the PK666 code and was kind enough to re-organize and clean it up quite a bit. This may spoil your fun when comparing it to the NQ source, or I could be completely wrong.

Worth a mention though if it doesn't seem to be organized the same.

*Here's an old as hell version from july 2009 right before Doc re-organized:
