  • Qbism Super8

I haven't seen much about it on the forums here so I thought I'd post it.

ANyone else try out the Qbism Super8 Quake engine?
    qbism game engine

It's kinda the opposite of what most engines go for with it's deliberately low-fi visuals. But does have some pretty cool features and the crispy lo-def visuals actually look pretty good. Also 27 different color palettes to choose from, colored lighting, and runs very fast and smooth.

I'm rather enjoying it so far.

This looks sweet! Gonna check it out, could make for some very interesting mods that purposefully go for a "cartoony" look. Thanks for sharing.

I just tried this engine out. Different, out of the ordinary, and very cool. It has a great menu system and something about the gritty rendering is awesome. It has me racking my brain on a small mod designed specifically for it, like a twisted, totally out of the ordinary episode or something.

Yeah, it is very cool and fun. I've been using it exclusively since the latest build could actually run on my laptop. I agree that the gritty/crunchy rendering goes with the quake atmosphere quite well. Haven't tried it yet, but wondering if high res resources can be loaded into it and how they would come out? I kinda doubt its possible though.

The colored lighting is nice, but I wish it was just a little less subtle and less palette dependent. It has a few issues with some lit packs unfortunately.

The pal300 palette is pretty cool to play with. Not all of the included ones are good, but at least more than half are fun to play with.

The menu is nice. Simple and clean. Though I wish there was an option for an advanced option menu in order to tweak some of the other settings from the menu instead of having to use the console.

That would be awesome if you made a mod specifically for it.

necropimp: significant update, bsp2 (huge maps)!
Build 2 : bsp2 map support and transparency qbism game engine

Anyway, post here with bugs/help/suggestions. I don't stop by quakeone as often as I'd like but I'll watch this thread.

palette/ colored lighting: Yeah, the way colored lighting is implemented is very fast but heavily dependent on palette matching. Partly due to style and partly due to the 8-bit limitation. Some folks like this more subtle style because textures, fullbrights, and animations show through better. The option would be higher accuracy but with too much saturation or distortion. Maps can look better when a custom palette is tweaked with color adjustment to better suit the lighting and/or fog used.

Nice Jeff! I love what you have done with the old makaqu engine. I'm on Linux the last few years now, but Super8 runs awesome via wine so I've been able to enjoy it from time to time. Glad its continuing to get new stuff and improvements.

Another Jeff! Great to hear that it runs in Wine. I had not checked recently. We may be seeing new things from Makaqu eventually as well, Mankrip is active on inside3d.

Oh yes I'm aware and I've been following Mankrip's recent software engine work. It looks pretty sweet.
