  • Winquake resolution troubles

    Hi all,

I'm trying to reinstall quake on a new machine. Half of the resolution options are gone (theres only 4:3 aspect ratio options). On my laptop I also have 16:10 video modes, and my new machine has a 16:10 screen so I really wanted those. I couldn't figure out what was causing it, so I deleted quake from my new machine and copy/pasted it back from my laptop. Still, there were no 16:10 video options. After some more searching I found the nodirectdraw launch option in wq.bat. After using that, I all of a sudden got 16:9 video modes, but still no 16:10 options. After still more searching, I found this old website: commands t-z. Under the vid_describemodes section it describes how certain resolutions need certain drivers. However, using the command on my laptop showed that the both the 16:10 and 4:3 modes were using the same driver (DDRAW8.DRV), which shows up on my new machine, albeit without the 16:10 modes. I have no clue what to do now, as I don't know what package contains the drivers listed on that page for windows 7.

We get a lot of new guys here trying to run WinQuake, either out of nostalgia or some other reason. Trust us when we say that it's absolutely not worth it whatsoever. Lol.

I would recommend QuakeSpasm if you want that old gritty Quake feeling without all the hassle. You can lower the resolution, keep the sound sampling low quality, and turn off animation interpolation if you REALLY want it to look old-school.

Found a fix for anyone who's wondering. Widescreen resolutions are available in the latest version of winquake (get it from the ID ftp). Unfortunately, they won't show up on modern operating systems since quake uses directdraw to render them (strangely, disabling direct draw by adding -ddraw to the shortcut might allow you to use all or some of the missing resolutions). DirectDraw is no longer directly supported on windows, and is instead emulated which leads to all sorts of issues in games that use it. Fortunately, someone came out with a fixed ddraw.dll called DDHack that allows quake to show almost all of the resolutions (a few low resolutions are missing) including 1280x720 & 1280x900. It can be found at http://sol.gfxile.net/zip/ddhack10.zip and the sources at www.iki.fi/sol - Code - DirectDraw Hack.

I don't have a problem with people using WinQuake, en_carlson's info helped me out a bit. I didn't even know WinQuake had 16:10 resolutions, pretty neat.
