  • Super8 test build 267

A test build of recent color and transparency rendering improvements/ experiments:
[EDIT] Thanks for the feedback! Latest releases here- https://github.com/qbism/super8/releases

Super8 is a WinQuake (software rendering) client for Windows that can play new large maps, most old vanilla stuff, and most of the features of recent mods. It seems to run well in the latest Linux WINE.

The engine is based on Makaqu and code from several other engines and bugfixes... the miracles are theirs and the flaws are mine... see code and readme here: https://github.com/qbism/super8

For an existing install: Basically most will want to uninstall it. To keep an old config, change the cvar r_palette from 's8pal' to 'palette' or it will look washed-out. Also, the super8 folder is no longer referenced as a default. The old pak88 is optional. It contains alternate palettes which may or may not look OK with the new color model.

I like it! colors look much better now. One observation though. the gun models don't seem to behave well with scr_ofsx/y/z. I'm not sure if its something to do with
the screen aspect or what, but they get screwy when compared to Quakespasm.

oh also um... any chance for a toggle for fullbright blood, and a return of the fake low-res pixel doubling? A boy can dream.

Anyways, nice color improvement in AD for sure! Want me to try making some new palettes?

scr_ofsx/y/z: This is an attempt to automatically compensate for scaled-up transparent statusbar, which can hide a large part of the viewmodel. But it doesn't adapt to screen aspect. After checking out FitzQuake and QS behaviour I think this should be reverted, which would match QS. Users can manually adjust.

Not sure about fullbright particles. Perhaps a cvar color override. Fullbright blue if you want.

Pixel-doubling got broken and then removed during video code changes a while ago. It would be nice to bring back.

Check this out: EDIT- link removed, see newer builds in later post.
Automatic pixel-doubling for compatible modes, noted with 'S' in video mode menu. Easier to implement than expected, and no 'vid_stretch_by_2' cvar. Hopefully nobody will run out of slots on the video mode screen.

Oh, and yes, would enjoy new palettes. Color model is tuned-in and unlikely to change again.

Hey, I wanted to give it a shot also but I get the same error as Amon.

Is there a licence reason for not including the lib* files with the master files?
I am trying to give this a go on Win10 and I had to go copy all the missing files from my DP folder.

Maybe also state in your first post that the master files are needed and are a separate download.

One download package is preferable, if of course possible.

I'll take another look at the auto pixel stretch. Does it DIB error in all modes, or just the new 'stretch' modes?

Lacking dlls was an oversight. This download includes the dlls:

                Good News: Now works!

Bad News: Pixel doubling options don't seem to be there. I don't see an S by any of the video modes in my menu. Am I doing something wrong?

Sorry for the confusion. The pixel-doubler assigns video modes differently than past versions, and the vid_mode in a previous config may no longer be valid. This yet-another test update will revert to a working mode instead of error exit.
EDIT: Build 269 link removed, see newer build in later post.
That is the hope. I was unable to duplicate the exact situation on my machine.

At least I'm posting in a 'Quake Help' subforum.

269 keeps crashing on me whenever I try to change the screen resolution in the menu.
                        I'm on winxp 32 bit.

Thanks for your patience. I'm making headway toward a solution. Also the diagnostic report will be expanded to list all video modes. See S8report.txt in id1 folder. At present it only shows the current mode.

Thanks for reporting. I'm surprised 267 is crashing. It does not have the pixel-doubler and most have reported it working. Error message, or hard crash?

Windows 7. Tried the 267 and 269 with dlls with a clean Quake folder (just pak0 + pak1). No crashes. Tried putting them in my existing Quake folder. No crashes. Tried every video mode resolution. No crashes.

/Tried to crash it on my computer.
