  • ProQuake Launcher Beta: Download Here

This is the beta of the ProQuake Launcher.

The ProQuake Launcher is front-end for ProQuake with supplementary support for Enhanced GLQuake/WinQuake by aguirRe as ProQuake isn't capable of doing recent single player maps. Enhanced GLQuake/WinQuake is, like ProQuake, a faithful Quake and it has interpolation and, like ProQuake, GL and Win versions -- it is excellent for single player.

Like any beta, you use it at your own risk. It's been tested on a couple of machines and seems to be very solid, but live testing always turns up oddities or sometimes "interesting things".

If you aren't interested in something that hasn't been completely battle-tested then DON'T download this!

    What does it do?

ProQuake is an older engine and doesn't have a lot of the great features found in JoeQuake/Qrack or DarkPlaces.

It kicks ass because it is simple and authentic (old skool faithful style), easy to setup and hard to mess up. You don't see many ProQuake questions because it doesn't do very much. Less is more, sometimes.

This improves the ProQuake experience by converting those bulky .tga files to .jpg so you can share screenshots easily, effectively removes the 99 screenshots limit, and converts all of your demos to .dz format so those can be shared as well.

This has only been tested on 2 machines and should be pretty solid, but I already know of 3 or 4 things I want to change/improve upon.

Any feedback or ideas welcome. This is beta, if you download this please provide feedback. I have a Windows 98 machine but haven't bothered to boot it up and see if it works on it.

Download: ProQuake Launcher Beta - 24 MB (includes some maps)

I will get around to doing these for a few of the other engines, hopefully soon.

Right now, I have it store some graphics in memory. I'll change the mechanics of that so it uses less memory while running.

I've received a lot of feedback from some different people and need to rework a couple of other things.

Thanks for the feedback on that! I have a lot of RAM so that wasn't something I was consciously thinking about.

(My Win 98 machine doesn't have much RAM, but I haven't tested it on that old computer yet.)

I had an issue with grapple to.. I had Lefty ride me and we couldn't figure out why it was doing that auto release thingy.. Was funny.. and noisey.. which I didn't mind but took some time to get used to it not leaving me hanging where I grappled to.

The ProQuake Launcher only starts Quake and quits after you start it, so it shouldn't impact anything in-game.

I think I know what you did. It isn't your fault, it was an oversight on how the buttons are labelled. Clicking QView, which exits to the server browser is the proper way to begin multiplayer, but that isn't very clear. I think you used the button intended to start single player.

I'll work on making it more clear what button does what. (Someone else mentioned this earlier).

              Baker,

Should be great to have a Qrack starter or/and JoeQuake starter like fuh and ezquake ones.

              Nice work btw!

How did it work for you, did it work fine?

Eventually just about any widely used engine that doesn't have one of these, will have one of these. I might even re-make the FuhQuake starter at some point, I have some ideas for it.

But, I need to get the first one perfect before I move on to more complicated ones. I decided to tackle ProQuake first because it has less features than other engines.

I am also mentally debating multi-language support. The JoeQuake Launcher "model" I was working on -- that I am more or less taking all of this code from -- was geared towards multi-language support.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll check it out.

I haven't had time lately to dedicate to making some revisions to it, but maybe I'll have time this week.

I'm not sure yet but that wouldn't surprise me if that is the cause.

                        Thanks for including that information.

Yeah, I'm sorry. I need to release a new one ASAP.

I had the beta expire 9/1/2006 but made a small mistake and didn't initialize the color scheme before the expiration message -- hence, black on black text.

The message, which can't be read, says "This beta is expired, please download the final version."

I got side tracked in 2nd half of August and unfortunately haven't finished up the final version, so there isn't a newer one to download up.

I have all of my notes on improvements based on user feedback and I should be able to wrap that.

Very sorry about that, Vegetous. I'll get to work on that.
