  • Darkplaces or Proquake decision

Well it seems I am stuck between the choice of two clients for online use. what do you guys think I shoudl use? proquake or darkplaces? I'll list the pros/cons for each.

    Darkplaces: pros
I get 1000 fps (without rt world , with rt world i get 200-600
subtracts ping by 30 (25-45 ping)
    easier to aim
    awesome graphics

    cons:

cant connect to cheat free servers ( A BIG ONE IM WORRIED ABOUT - I want to be able to connect to other ca/dm servers)
    can get very dark
    no .LOC support
takes a while to connect to some servers, have to hit connect "servername" repeadedly till it kicks in. (not a major concern)

    proquake:pros

    can connect to chaetfree servers
    loc support
connects very quickly to any server
very good brightness;shadows dont get in the way of things

    cons:

bad fps 40-60 ( dont know why this happens, if someone knows the solution please help)
worse ping than DP (50-60 ping)
harder to aim mouse movement is weird
    bad graphics

The thing I'm most worried about is not being able to connect to cheat-free. I thougth I heard LordHavoc say once that there was a cheat-free module for darkplaces but a not very secure one. I was on an awesome cheatfree ca game with proquake and I felt very bad that I couldnt play to the best of my ability with darkplaces. Is there any way to create a security module???

I also dont understand why my FPS is worse in proquake than in DP. Proquake has much worse graphics... Any solutions? I have pq_maxfps set to 100 and Ive NEVER even seen it go beyond 60

I also don't get it why Darkplaces gives me such a low ping, even with the texture pack I use and the awesome graphics. Is there a way I can optimize proquake so it has such a good ping as well?

    Thanks,

    MONSTER

I would say proquake. While I'm not a graphics-driven person, I find glpro to be very smooth at my 60-80 ping and all the features are nice. glpro ftw
Oh and the fps if you have ansiotropy and antialaising set to entremely high levels that may be causeing the fps lag in glpro. Try 2xq antialaising and 4x ansiotropic filtering. It's possible darkplaces overrides these settings.

It is possible that darkplaces has full 64-bit support and proquake does not because there wansn't 64 bit back then. Odd.

Monster, you can change your brightness/gamma/contrast in DP under the COLOR submenu. You can fix it so it's just like proquake.

              Monster,

Let me first say that you are not really getting 1000 fps in darkplaces.
You are getting the data throughput but your monitor is limited to your
refreshrate. So even if your showfps say 99999 you are only getting the max the monitor / card can pump out. DarkPlaces is the "Jessica Simpson's Tits" of quake clients, but... unless the server runs DP and the mod utilizes its potential, your driving a ferrari on a golf course.

Only cheatfree servers are CA, and you hate CA cause you like strategic games. Just play what you can play. Play DP. Tweak it out, or play proquake if you feel like cheatfree.

Quake isnt married life, yes, ou can venture and use another client!

Monster, when Intel invented the first chip back in the 70's, it ran at something like 100khz and did 4 bit operations. Over time, processors became capable of doing 8 bit, then 16 bit, the 32 bit common people use today, and the new 64 bit technoligy that the richer people use. It's just more efficant processing.

You can play with DarkPlaces and if you want to connect to cheat-free users then switch to ProQuake.

CHI CA+ is really the only regularly busy cheat-free server. You can play non-cheatfree old skool DM at quake.shmack.net:26002 by doing vote-match or play at dm.clan-rum.org.

Control Panel -> Display Adapter -> Click the Settings Tab and then click the Advanced Button -> Click on the Tab labelled with whatever your graphics card is and manually set the refresh rate from 60Hz to, say, 120 Hz globally or for the specific resolution you use with ProQuake, like 640x480 or whatever.

ProQuake doesn't set a higher refresh rate or break v_sync.

DarkPlaces does report better ping times and seems smoother over the internet than any other client. I feel the aim is better too.

                    DarkPlaces cons:
                    can get very dark
                    no .LOC support
takes a while to connect to some servers, have to hit connect "servername" repeadedly till it kicks in. (not a major concern)
The thing about DarkPlaces that trips me up the worst is pressing tilde to open the console and then pressing ESC to close it. That messes me up bigtime. I wish there were a cvar to make tilde both open and close the console.

I've gotten used to the tilde thing, and lordhavoc could probably fix that in an instant. Perhaps you should ask him sometime on #darkplaces irc.anynet.org

and with the display adapter refresh rate things, My monitor only supports 60hz. I don't want to keep changing the desktop resolution because it makes things REALLY small (and screws up all my icons). I could try playing proquake in 1400x1050, my desktop resolution... That did work, but my FPS is capped at 60, even though I set the maxfps to 999. Sounds like vsync is on, but in my nvidia control panel i have it set to application-controlled.

I also have a dead pixel in the left of my monitor which is really getting on my nerves. It appears and disappears randomly.

I am 99.9% sure that you can just keybind tilde for the console. I recommend using CTRL-ESC in Darkplaces though as that one _always_ works.

ProQuake doesn't set a higher refresh rate or break v_sync. The End. You may set it to "application controlled" in your video card control panel, but ProQuake will not do anything with that. It will still be limited to 60 Hz.

This means the ONLY way you can have a higher refresh rate in ProQuake is to MANUALLY specify a higher refresh rate in your video adapter control panel.

I believe toggle-console in DarkPlaces only designates a key to open the console, not to close it. I'm pretty sure you have to use Escape to close it.
