  • Cannot start Proquake? (Linux FC5)

When I attempt to start sqpro, I get the following output:
    Code:
    Added packfile ./id1/pak0.pak (339 files)
    Added packfile ./id1/pak1.pak (85 files)
    PackFile: ./id1/pak1.pak : gfx/pop.lmp
    Playing registered version.
    PackFile: ./id1/pak0.pak : gfx.wad
    Console initialized.
    Security module initialized
    UDP Initialized
    Exe: 09:38:19 Sep 18 2002
     8.0 megabyte heap
    PackFile: ./id1/pak0.pak : gfx/palette.lmp
    PackFile: ./id1/pak0.pak : gfx/colormap.lmp
./sqpro: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libvga.so.1: undefined symbol: _xstat
This is preventing me from starting it. I have libvga.so.1. ltrace on sqpro gives as the last few lines:
    Code:
    vga_getmousetype(0x80adaf8, 0x809ce94, 0x80b5480, 0x80b5468, 0x80b5450./sqpro: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libvga.so.1: undefined symbol: _xstat
Help would be very much appreciated.

I'm not a Linux expert at all, but ProQuake requires an svga library to start, which can be obtained at http://www.svgalib.org/ and based on the error description mentioning the file, that may very well be the problem you are having.

This quote from someone with a similar problem might be of help:

"I decided to give the precompiled svgalib from the the official svgalib website a try. Surprisingly, all you have to do is copy the libvga.so.1 file from their website to /lib. Unfortunately there was an incompatibility with my version of libm.so.6 (it was looking for libm.so.5). A symlink (ln -s /lib/libm.so.6 /lib/libm.so.5) got [ProQuake to work]."

Here are some reference threads discussing Quake and Linux which frequently discuss ProQuake.

    http://forums.runecentral.com/viewtopic.php?t=970
    http://forums.runecentral.com/viewtopic.php?t=1180

Unfortunately, I know little to nothing regarding Linux and Quake. I've heard that DarkPlaces has the best Linux support and that JoeQuake also has a solid Linux build (http://www.runecentral.com/joequake/downloads.html).

/There are others here with far more Linux experience than myself.

FC5 was giving me shit last night as well! Apparantly the root problem was that yum isn't working and they are currently fixing it. Anyways I switched to nUbuntu

as for sqpro, I could try to walk you through the steps that I know but I think you're better off visiting the runequake forums and asking Slot Zero.

Feel free to IM me though, I'm here to help! I never got sqpro to work the way I wanted it too so I resolved to using darkplaces without a graphics card

I got it to run after doing yum install svgalib now that the repos are back up. However, now there's another problem. At runtime, there are FOUR different quake windows, all rendered in very, very small size. pushed at the top of the screen. Any idea what could be wrong?

Still having trouble with sqpro? I know I am (with getting the mouse to work). If you want a clean cut glquake for linux, try Tyr-quake (thanks to Nintendo Wii (the player, not the overpriced thing) for showing me this). You'll have to compile the engine but that's not too hard. It's pretty much GLquake if not glpro.

Info can be found here: http://disenchant.net/engine.html and http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Quake-HOWTO-3.html#ss3.1

I compiled tyr-quake instead of tyr-glquake. Runs faster on my laptop and it's still GL'd.
