  • ezQuake vs. FuhQuake - Weird Experiences!

    Hello,

I am new to this Forum, and also to the Community.
I played Quake1 in 1996 till 1999, but now I am back to this legendaric game trying to find a good client.

While browsing through the Web I see that ezQuake is currently the active Client...

But I have been testing the "old" Fuhquake as well and I have made a weird experience. Even if ezQuake is supposed to be better (and with better Grafix) - I wonder why ezQuake makes the walls move angular or unsmooth when I turn my quake figure. With Fuhquake everything runs super smooth and feels very good. But with ezQuake it doesnt. Does anyone know the reason? Or does this also depend on my grafic card? I am using a geforce2 chip card.

    Thanks for help.
    Cheers,
    Tigerix.

PS: Regarding my grafic card: I have a high frame rate even with ezQuake, but with FuhQuake the movements are looking much better and smoother.

PPS: Anyone else similar experiences / feeling ?

this site is mainly supported by and directed to the NQ community, I suppose you should look for help in here: www.quakeworld.nu (since ezquake and fuhquake are qw clients) !
    Frum QuakeBrasil

    Lots of Quake related stuff

Sorry, I might sound stupid, but what is the real difference? I thought these are just different clients... And this site is also a quake1 fansite, or am I wrong?
Maybe I dont really get it. Can you help me out ?

that is ur Field Of Vision (FOV) setting most likely.. standard fov is 90 but settings above 90 will give the so called Fisheye-effect.. however u will be able to see more of ur environment (wider angle) which is good

        edit:

or after closer reading.. u mean its not ant-aliased? that is.. u get jagged edges? i have not much knowledge of either of those qw-clients but there will probably some setting that lets u change it.. anisotropic filter might make it better or worse too.. u may want to force those settings in ur GFX-card driver (if it is set to aplication controlled)

          Thanks for your answer peg.
I know fov, but thats not what I wanted to describe. passing walls and turning strafing lets the walls not passby smoothly. It is like jumping.
Instead of pixel by pixel it hops. Do you get what I wanna say ?

Is your card an MX model? if so, try -nomtex on the commandline. This turns off multitexture support, as most MX cards do not have multiple texture management units. Also, do you notice a degrade in fps when you turn?
Try, lowering all the eyecandy to minimal and see if this anomaly occurs.
If all else fails, just stick to Fuh

The difference between NETQUAKE, and QUAKEWORLD is simple.
netQUAKE is the original QUAKE, that we all know from the start.
QuakeWorld, was a version of Quake that came out several months after the original simply to better facilitate online gameplay circa 1996. IE, 300 ping on a 28.8kbps modem. The gameplay uses prediction code, to manage player movements. But, as it is better for a high pings, its not perfect. In my opinion, netquake at 35ping feels smoother than QW at 35ping so since DSL and CABLE are the dominant means to the internet, I dont need QW.

There are though, a great deal of features that make QW worth using. Built in server browser, netcode for playing cross country/continental, plethera of servers, solid base of players that are religious about the game, and active coders that continue to make the game tailored to the current online community.

If you wish try DARKPLACES http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/. It supports both QuakeWorld and netQUAKE and truely is the all in one quake client.

Thanks very much for all your help
              Really appreciated.

Its a full proper Geforce2 DDR
The problem is not about network. Its about the grafic movement general.
My tests are only done in singleplayer mode.

I have done a bit more of testing, and found out, that vid_vsync 0 makes fuhQuake run unsmooth at me. It isnt as unsmooth as ezQuake, but still it is unsmooth.

If I put vid_vsync 1 then fuhQuake runs perfectly smooth. But in ezQuake setting vid_vsync 1 doesnt help much.

              It maybe improves it from
              _......_......_......_

              to:
              _..._..._..._..._

              while Fuhquake runs like this:
              ____________

when sliding in front of walls.

So I still dont have a clue what the difference is between FuhQuake and ezQuake configuration.
I have copied the FuhQuake config to ezQuake, but still the same problem.

So I guess: Maybe its a default setting, which didnt exist in FuhQuake or which has changed since FuhQuake which is causing the trouble.

Its a pity... I wish I could find the root of the problem

do u play both clients at the same resolution and refreshrate? (or monitor vertical Hz)

it maybe that vsync works fine for a particular frequency bot not so well for another..

also u may need to use this tool to force ur monitor refresh rate at a certain resolution.. but:

USE WITH CAUTION AND AT UR OWN RISK! WRONG SETTINGS MIGHT DAMAGE UR MONITOR!

I changed from fuhquake to ezquake during qhLAN10 in january (big lan for QW players around the world each january) and in ezQuake you can use independent physics, so you can have more FPS than allowed but the amount your sending back to the server is still 77 fps witch makes it smoother.
if you collaborate it with your hz on your monitor it will be 5 times smoother than fuhquake ever was/is.

If you got a good monitor and pc then you can use 154hz on your monitor in 800x600 resolution and 154fps in the independent physics (cl_maxfps 154 have +set cl_independentphysics 1 in your cmdline)

I use powerstrip (googleit) to get the best hz on my monitor.
if you got a bad monitor then just put it on 77hz on whatever resolution you use.
