  • qrack on linux, rawr!

So I searched & worked a lot for a decent Quake engine that runs on Linux successfully (that means I can listen to music at the same time... ).
I discovered Qudos' sources at http://qudos.quakedev.com/linux/quake1/ and built qrack from them. Now I am totally astonished by the speed. At 1280x1024x32 and "old" settings I get about 300fps in timedemo demo1. I cannot remember having such highspeeds ever before. Darkplaces totally sucks in comparison (I did not tweak the config for "old" though), something around 150fps. Ha!

Even though I would prefer Fitzquake or aguirRe's glquake for my Singleplayer needs, I think I can settle with qrack. :d

I think Qudos had aguirRe's glquake and also Joequake sources for Linux once, but I don't know if they were with SDL too.

Nice! Now I guess I should install Linux

I get 126fps HIGH settings, 339fps fast settings: Geforce 6600GS

BTW, I've had a stable new version build for a while.
but havent cleaned up the loose ends... (dox etc..)

    What's New?

Added bloom support; blooms enable a glowing effect around fullbright colors.. ie explosions, skybox, lights etc..
    use r_bloom to toggle

    New Multiplayer scoreboard

cl_nocenterprint Disables centerprint messages for demo watching... (default 0)

r_simpleitems Replaces 3d models with equivelent sprites (default 0)

cl_gun_fovscale Fixes proper rendering of viewmodel at fov values greater than 90 (default 0) (removed r_viewmodelsize cvar)

saving various cvars to config on exit

    modified smoke particles a bit

correct fov rendering with widescreen resolutions

cleaned up the gun sway code when moving

plus more stuff i cant think of at the moment....

Argh, I just realised that this is not really bugfree. I'll keep using it though, seems not too bad.

Bloom, eww. So overrated. Simpleitems is nice. And fovscale sounds great.

I got 420fps in fast. Vertex lighting and detail textures eat quite a bit if enabled. I am not sure trinilear and anisotropic(sp) filtering work correct as they did have no impact on the fps. Particles didn't either.
HQ mode gave me something around 120fps.

a 1.2ghz and a 6600 is a bit powerful for Quake, unless you're useing darkplaces which with the right settings is basically Doom3

On second thought, my 6800 supports 16x ansiocropic filtering and I did'nt reslly notice a drop in FPS from 8x to 16x really, shit just looked better
I think qrack only lets you do 4x.. you could set it higher in your nvidia control panel though.
