Who buys a Mac to play games?

Who knows. BUT why deny people who bought Macs for other purposes, no matter how silly, the ability to play games if its no real harm for others to provide it? I know LordHavoc had been wanting to do a DP for Mac but for a long while had no one to test it for him.

The elementary school in my town uses MACS, probably because they're easier to use for little kids.

Nobody! We buy Macs for serious stuff only

I'm graphic designer and musician and I'm working with Apple computers for obvious reasons.
We're here to share info about this game we all love named Quake, aren't we?
                So... back to topic...

I ran probably everything Quake on my Mac without problem.
Of course, there's a wider range of Quake engines for PC out there and you mostly have to stick with basic GLQuake on the Mac.
                Some flavours are available though.

                Starting from the above list:

                • Fruitz of Dojo port:
Overall great and stable MacOSX native app (cocoa).
Version 1.1 shows better image contrast but version 1.0 runs smoother on PPC.
Creates a default 'glquake' folder of meshes (precache model files):
Ends up in wasted disk space and ugly sandroses of polygons when a conflict occur between custom models and precached files.

                • MacGLQuake:
                Carbon version.
Not as solid and stable than Fruitz of Dojo's.
Runs on both OS 9 and OS X.
                No meshes.
Was developped side by side with GLHexen II and MacNehahra (read below).
                A good alternative.

                • DarkPlaces:
                Looks promising.
                In developpement.
Stable, but a lot of FPS slowdowns.
An interesting *mod* experience for the advanced user:
RTLights and World, custom textures and effects...
Don't go for this one if you're new to Quake.
                At least on the Mac...

                • Tenebrae:
                Great for the eye candy.
                Needs a big config.
                Not the average stuff here.
Basically, you can't run anything but original Quake levels with this one.

                • Since I'm a die-hard single player, I leave QW on the Mac to somebody else...

                OK. My 2 cents here:

                • Mac OS 9: For those of you who don't feel the need to upgrade, go for GLQuake!
This solid port runs like hell in GL mode on the late Apple system.
For the curious, get RiotQuake for OS 9, from the abandoned QuakeEx development.

                UPDATE:
                • Mac OS 9

                • Mac OS X: Among *all* Quake engines for Mac OS X, my devotion goes to MacNehahra.
The main purpose of this very stable carbon port (OS 9/OS X) is to run Nehahra... Huh!

(Hey, MacQuake fans! You just played this awsome mod, did you? - If not, rush here , dowload the stuff - ALL THE STUFF, I said! Yes, go for the movie... Quake eyes only )
Ok... this happens all the time when I'm talking about Nehahra... erm...

So, once the Nehahra mod is installed, you can play original Quake and about all custom maps and mods as well with this app!
                - MacNeh is more stable and accurate to play heavy modded (new models, progs.dat...) add-ons or episodes.
                - It runs correctly mods like Zerstrer, Malice, The Lost Chapters or Quoth unlike Fruitz of Dojo engine.
                - No meshes.

Outside of that, you can take advantage or fiddle with Nehahra mod aspects on regular and custom maps:

                - Improved AI (switchable).
                - Nice sprites and smoke.
                - Game variable speed settings.
                - Tsemochian Autoshotgun & Sprocket (cool weapons!).
                - Flight, Regeneration & Resurrection artifacts.
                - larger 'embedded' hud.
                - Better contrast image.
                - Better (adjustable) water effects.

Only rare errors (precache overflow or alloc bloc: full), mainly on recent maps, made me swith to GLQuake.

                • Custom use on the Mac:

                Maps alone:
                - Put the xxx.bsp in Quake/ID1/maps and type 'map xxx' (without quotes) in the console.

                Mods/episodes/add-ons:
                - Keep the whole package in it's folder.
                - Put the whole thing in your game folder (not ID1).
                - Drop the folder on the app.
                - Start a new game.
                - If this doesn't work, find the 1rst map name in the ReadMe or check it in the pakX.pak with PakRat.
                - Do the same as above and type type 'map xxx' (without quotes) in the console.

My config for Quake, at the time of these tests:
                Macintosh PPC Dual 1.25 G4 OS X.3.9 - 1.5 Ram - GeForce Ti 4600 - 1280x960 - LaCie electron22blueIV

JohnXmas, that was some very high quality information on selecting the right Mac client Especially the information about mods playing correctly and the brief instructions on how to do x, y and z.

Very nice ... we need that, people look for that type of information.

It's the purpose of these forums, isn't it?

I'll add some more detailed Quake/Mac info later.
In fact, my previous post was very general
