  • Feature request all engines

Hi: I live in Austria and have a Greman keyboard.
I find it sometimes hard to find keys like: !"$%&/()=?`*'_:;+-><}\]{[{[zy
I recently found out that ezquake can load keymaps for default, polish, finnish, german, hungarian, uk and environment.
So it would be great if Netquake and Singleplayer engines could load those too.

I've thought about this. It is a shame that Quake isn't friendly for different keyboard keymaps, and one of the smartest features added to ezquake.

How does this work in DarkPlaces? I've looked thru the command list and cvarlist and don't see anything on this (that I can tell, at least).

In my experience, I think ezQuake always overcomplicates any feature and would rather look at the DarkPlaces implementation.

Out of the box (that is one of Darkplaces' strengths).
If only Darkplaces could look and play like good old Quake, it would be my engine of choice for everything.

edit: I am pretty used to the english layout though. Years ago I put little stickers on the key (just for Quake...), heh. Some engines are totally broken though (or maybe I mix up things and it is Wine).

It just detects the keymap on startup

EDIT: Spirit beat me to it

Sounds like a very smart way to do it.

Linux: I use Joequake-gl.glx it somehow detects the keymap.
WinNT4.0 and Linux+Wine : Well I'm getting used to the english layout too but sometimes I mix it up.

or consider changing each keys config in question, much like configging a PC Game pad for M.A.M.E.

Does darkplace.exe auto-detect the key mapping or just the darkplaces-sdl.exe?

                        I've got this to work.

Probably tomorrow, I'll do a ProQuake 3.71 with only this additional feature so anyone who wants to add the feature to their engine can ExamDiff/WinMerge it against 3.70's source and quickly see how it works and implement it.

This of course will need some testing by those who don't use the US keyboard. I have been switching back and forth between the English/Portugeuse ABNT2 keyboard layout while looking a picture of the ABNT2 keyboard so I knew what keys were supposed to be where.

This is a 95% complete beta of international keyboard support, but I need feedback on this since I do not actually have a non-US keyboard for testing, although hopefully the keymap feature in Windows can be trusted.

There are a couple of differences between this and DarkPlaces that I wanted to eliminate. DarkPlaces handling of the closing the console is not implemented (Quake had tilde hard coded) and I am getting unexpected results with some of these keys when trying to bind them in Customize Controls but DarkPlaces to a lesser extent is acting a little strange about this so maybe it is the keymap feature in Windows doing a poor job.
