Can't go wrong with Qrack, DarkPlaces or ProQuake. There are graphics and links to these clients on the home page at the bottom left.

I think DarkPlaces has an edge in the setup menu (currently) and is the most "advanced" over all. Qrack really has the most effects (rain, cell shading, nail trails, and WAY too much more).

ProQuake is old school, but if you use the ProQuake Launcher (http://www.quakeone.com/proquake) it is super-easy to setup.

The above are also good for online play (normal Quake).

For single player use, FitzQuake is really easy to setup and Enhanced GLQuake can run more single player maps with full compatibility than any other engine.

If you plan to play Quakeworld, ezQuake is the most advanced/popular/refined QW engine.
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

jayzus baker, when someone asks for something straightforward and easy, give them proquake. DON'T give them darkplaces and DON'T list them every engine available, lol :p

It really depends what you are going to do. Multiplayer? Singleplayer? For Singleplayer Fitzquake or aguirRe's glquake are the ONLY engines I would recommend when it's about "just install and play".

Baker's being modest not linking the guy to proquake 3.50+

IMHO, I suggest QRack. But once you are more acustomed to modified quake engines, test all others.
