  • Play normal quake with enhanced Nehahra.exe

    I am not talking about "Nehahra.exe -id1 ".

Has anyone noticed, that if you take the Pak2.pak from WarpSpasm, and rename it and put it into id1, you can run the enhanced Nehahra.exe without the game of nehahra installed, and, guess what, the game so started will immediately assume that you are running with a "-id1", without having to manually create a Lnk and add the "-id1" to its command line.

The beautiful side of this method is, if you put the nehahra game in, then by double clicking the executive, it will still load nehahra as its default gamedir.

Just recently discovered this little trick, thought some one might be interested.

You could be a nice guy and say that you got that info by AguirRe over at Func.
You are better off using the proper glquake.exe by AguirRe if you want to play normal Quake. That "nehahra.exe" for id1 was an idea for Linux users.

Some corrections here, using the "-id1" option is recommended at any time you want to play non-Nehahra material with my NehQuake engine. It makes sure resource search order is correct and also reverts cheat codes and other stuff to normal GLQuake behaviour.

This is actually how I play any Quake mod; I always use NehQuake. If you don't have Nehahra installed, you can just copy the small Warp pak2 file to the nehahra directory and rename it to pak0 as a dummy replacement. You still need "-id1" though, which is also automatically enabled by "-hipnotic", "-rogue" or "-quoth".

Of course, I still recommend to d/l the full Nehahra mod and install it properly as it's one of the all time best Q1SP mods. Not to mention the four hour machinima movie ...

Well, I think what aguirRe said over Func is that you can use "-id1" to play normal quake, but here the point I want to make is, with the fake nehahra pak in id1 folder, you don't even need the "-id1" any more, just double click the nehahra.exe (at aguirRe's site, the file downloaded is still glquake.exe inside the zip file, by the way, but I always rename it to nehahra.exe after extracting it ), then it automatically loads id1 as the default gamedir (that is, if the full nehahra game is not present). See the difference?

I don't know if this is technically less reliable than "-id1" or not, seems to be working fine for me!

actually, not long after I first got hold of a copy of nehahra (back in 2002 or 2003 I think), I started using dpnehahra.exe to run normal quake. You should really take a look at the graphic enhancement it does to the game, especially when a Wraith (in DoE) attacks!

I just prefer the looks of NehQuake; e.g. better particles, blood and subtle dynamic coloured lighting along with the nice 32-bit sprites.
