  • Which Client?

I am wondering which client I should use. I currently have Tenebrae, but I don't think I can customize textures using it. Does anybody know which is the best client? (I want to be able to customize textures/models stuff as well.)

Also, how do I transmit saves between clients (if I can)?

    Thanks.

If you're used to Tenebrae then I supposed Darkplaces. It's pretty much the same good graphics but it performs better and is great for modders.

I would assume every quake engine treats quake saves the same way. You won't have to worry about moving them if you put darkplaces in the same directory as tenebrae.

Thanks, I'll try Darkplaces. I literally just finished Quake (die Shub-Niggurath!) so I am not really that botherd about my saves any more. I'll try out Darkplaces now.

PS: is there a thread for installing mods on Darkplaces or anything?

Nope. Just unzip the zip file into your quake directory and go. You may also want to delete the source archive and the binaries for platforms you don't use (aka Windows people should zap the linux binaries and Linuxfans should kill the *.exe files.

If you want an engine that simply updates the graphics in Quake without heavily changing it, then I'd go for Qrack. If you want to overload your graphics card and change the look of Quake completely, then go for Darkplaces. I personally never could get into Darkplaces... It never truly felt like Quake to me. By downloading the right stuff, you can make Qrack look really nice, without making Quake a whole different game.

          Edit:
Here is a simple screenshot of start.bsp in both engines:

          Darkplaces:

          Qrack:

And another screenshot of Qrack for fun:

Do remember that the Darkplaces screenshot is not using High-res textures (unlike the Qrack screenshots).

DarkPlaces might work on your computer if you do this as the command line:

                  c:\quake\darkplaces.exe -safe

LordHavoc told me about that trick. It ignores all the extensions that the graphics card SAYS it supports and doesn't use them.

Using -safe got DarkPlaces to run on my ATI Radeon laptop. Without using -safe, it crashes.

Please, always remember, that you can simply turn off the "RT Worlds lighting" in Darkplaces !
(it is turned off by default i think)

This makes the look much more like original Quake.

And the framerate/performance is much much better then.
It is easily turned of (if it was accidently turned on) by open the ingame Menu/options/Customize Lighting.
I personally always play without RT World Lights (the screenshot above is made with RT World Lights on)

So dont keep on blaming DP, that it is only something for graphic junkies.
It is not the case !
Like Ligthning_hunter wrote (maybe he didnt know how to turn of RT World lights):
"If you want to overload your graphics card and change the look of Quake completely, then go for Darkplaces"

Of course, due to different gameplay codes, you have a different "feeling" and some
Fan-Made-Maps should better played with other engines due to some triggers wont work with DP.
It is perfect for Modders. Thats where the real strength of DP is (no doubt). It gives you almost unlimited
possibilities to change the game and physics to the way you want.

                    Thats why I love it.

Of course everybody should make his own decision (no doubt about it).
Just give them all a fair try.
Thats why there are so many clients out there.

Actually, I never mentioned the lighting specifically in my first post. I only stated that it wasn't "Classic Quake". Even if you disable the Realtime lighting, there are many other options that do not behave like normal Quake. I also don't like the particle effects as much as Qrack. The primary reason, as you stated, is the mod support. I really don't use any engine that has a list of supported mods. In order for me to enjoy a new engine for any game, it must be able to play all mods just as the original game did. Qrack succeeds in this. Besides, r00k is constantly adding new features that enhance the gameplay of Quake - rather than change it. That's a huge advantage in my book.

Like people have said though - it's all a matter of opinion.

If you want quake to look like quake, use q95.exe. If you want to try people's alterations of the engines, try qrack, darkplaces, joequake, proquake, etc.

DarkPlaces is a very well written engine, fully supporting a ton of quake mods, modern features close to or greater than Doom3, runs on multiple platforms, and an active developer.

Some people like a basic engine to play online. Smooth gameplay, basic gfx, solid performance. Hmm, doesnt Darkplaces have this? Oh might i mention DP has a better network protocol than QuakeWurld?

Baker's uProQuake 3.xx has a great deal of features for online play as well. Small foot print and custom features for new players.

Oh and then there's also Qrack with some stuff people like...

I guess bottom line is, check out all your options and use the engine(s) that suit your needs

                          Quake on...!
