  • Qrack 1.84 Expected FPS rates?

Okay, so what expected range of FPS should I expect with this old rig:

    G-Xtreme 169.04 drivers/Qrack 1.84
    NF7-S 2.0
    [email protected]
    2GB Ram (2-3-2-6 400FSB)
    eVGA 7800GS OC (464/1300)
    Raptors

With AF 4-6x, Trilinear filtering, no AA, high qual setting

    1280x I get around 55-1xx FPS

    1600x ~40-80/90FPS

In malice it's about the same, but I have to turn Rain drop textures off or the FPS hits in the 30s... are these FPS typical for the settings I'm running and hardware?

YEah with rain setting on, it bogus down with High Quality on... I'm not sure if it's GPU (I wouldn't assume) or CPU (I'd assume) as the bottle neck.

This is pretty much the last of the topdawg AGP cards, aside from the overpriced, rip, Gainward 7800GS+ / 1950Pro (wtf would you pay $200+ for an AGP card these days?!). Are the Qrack lighting and enhancements that taxing? Either way without the rain it's still nice to play! Thanks!

The gl_rain option will also lag for me in large maps. On average, it takes away about 15-20fps. Rook has stated that it is the same result for him. He stated that he might look at the code to see if he can make further tweaks on it. For now, you might want to either turn the rain off completely, or have it turned on only for maps that you know won't lag with it. If you want, you can turn it on for individual maps by using the cl_loadmapcfg option. That's what it's there for.

By the way, it's sweet that everyone is giving Malice some attention.
I lucked out by finding the Malice CD on eBay for cheap, so I have the official CD Audio music to go along with the missions.

The method of the rain is pretty simple, but draws a ton of particles.
It starts with all the sky surfaces, finds their precalculated midpoints of each poly, then from that point, randomly shifts around a bit to make it look more "rainy" vs "water sprinkler", then drops the particle for 2.5 seconds until it hits something.. all along the way its falling randomly adding streak trails to give the shimmering reflective nature of rain...phew. All that said and it draws based on the confines of r_farclip. But still, I my fps choke. Though, the method of drawing isnt any different of that and rocketsmoke etc.. Maybe I should create a better vertexarray and just call streaks alone....

Here's a little what I have added reciently...
            tweaked caustics a bit..
fixed animation interpolation when switching weapons.

            added new message macros
%W = weapon in hand based on pq_weapons
%A = ammo output is "# 'ammotype' " whereas # is amount of {ammotype} of the gun in hand.
%At = output the ammotype only, "shells", "nails","rockets", or "cells" based on weapon in hand
            examples:
            "say_team I am dropping %At at %l."
            output:
"I am dropping rockets at yellow armor."

            "say_team I am at %l with my %W and %A"
            output:
"I am at Mound with my RL and 13 rockets "

WOW... you're a very skilled man! Actually I think the rain looks GREAT! Just my old beater cannot handle it atm. If I turn the quality down (vertex and dyn lighting) I can have the rain on fine... classic settings I'm in the 2xx fps easily. But the enhancements have revived the game completely for me. I've been playing around with malice for some what 5ys+ now or how ever long it 1st came out I got it immediately and was hooked! Def much more difficult than the standard Q1, what with no body armor!

I would like to thank you for all your hard effort in Qrack. It's revived a dead game for me. Now I'm back logged with the other multitude of old games I want to play b/c of you! Thanks a ton! lol

It's been a VERY long time since I've played Q1-2... never touched 3 or 4. So I've lost nearly all my config knowledge, alias scripting skills etc... It's like a completely new game to me, aside from the familiar maps.

Tell me, what do I do with these new command additions? Eg: cl_loadmapcfg ? I think 1.84 holds my settings now, Vs 1.83 would sometimes hold, sometimes not... I will test the suggestion about 24bit something or other to see if 1.84 crashes upon trying to load Malice... Hope it works!

              Thanks!

BTW- regarding that Malice w/ 1.84 crash: I've noticed that once it crashes, my desktop color hue is completely off and very bright, I have to restart my comp to get it to reset! Any fix for this (well yeah the game running would fix it :-p )

When does it crash? More details please!

God... is that a hogsnake? Man that is one UGLY MAW! lmfao... Yes it crashes as soon as the startup music starts, and the normal setting screen shows up... then I get that infamous error. THen I run setgamma to clear the hue up :-(

I've gotta get this working, I'm behind my nightly gaming schedule (I need this for after work stress relief!) haha thanks.

Ok, try this... Temporarily move the \texture folder out of the \Qrack folder, and play Malice without the high-res stuff. See if it still crashes.

Well, if you have an instant messanger like MSN or AIM, we could chat live.

Malice runs just fine for me. It must be something in your settings or texture folder that Qrack doesn't like. Qrack once crashed for me because of a bad image in the Texture folder. Dunno how it happened, but replacing the image fixed the issue. Let me know if you are still having problems running Malice.
