I use mpd on linux. Runs as a daemon, can be accessed from anywhere.
Now if I could just remember which Quake engine supported mpd / mpc... or was it a Quake 2 engine...Comment

xmms2 ftw
xmms2 is built on the same principles of mpd, it also is just a client
and can be controlled by damned near anything.
i like it because it means i can choose different gui's for different needs,
or (more often than not) go without a gui completely and rely on just keyboard shortcuts...
of course that also means it doesnt HAVE very many good options for gui.Comment
