  • Back to the basic.

    Hi there,

I've just installed Quake with a client called FTE(qw). Good client, easy to use and fast. But I really hate openGL.. 11 years a go I started playing Q1, with the "terrible graphics". I want those graphics back! When I change the renderer from OpenGL to Software, the graphics do go back to basic but it also goes from fullscreen to windowed mode. My mouse also doesn't seem to work when I switch, really annoying.

    Anybody who can help me?

I just tried QW, and those are the exact graphics I mean. 320x240, but it doesn't seem to run very smooth, like my pc has trouble running the game.. (A constant fps of 30-40 instead of 60).

There is a full blown Direct3D port of Quake at:

      mhquake

Using that should avoid all OpenGL problems.

Now that will solve your all your single player issues; if you are playing Quakeworld online (FTE does a lot of things so I'm not going to presume I know what you are doing with it) the above Direct3D Quake client is not a Quakeworld client just regular (Net)Quake.

If you are going for Quakeworld and playing it online and are wanting to use the software renderer, I'd recommend trying ZQuake's dedicated software renderer client (ZQuake is a Quakeworld client) ZQuake news

[My understanding that the ezQuake software renderer client is either non-existent these days or really in need of work or what not so that's why I'm not linking up that.]

If you need QW compatiblility, FTE also has a mini gl port, I know u HATE opengl (maybe it's just the blurry filtering of textures). You can use gl_texturemode gl_nearest in the console to make any openGL client look like software. Though, it will run faster since its using the GPU not your CPU.

I'd recommend doing that or running DQ, as at this point in time anything is better than basic SOFTWARE rendering.

There are a few problems with software Quake that manifest on recent PCs. The display update can get extremely jerky at times (probably due to the old DirectDraw wrapper that was used for WinQuake), and the solution is to either run with -dibonly (but you'll get a performance hit) or to switch video modes (you can even switch back to your previous mode after).

Some modes get better acceleration than others. I guess the basic 320 x 200 fullscreen is the most basic mode that's virtually guaranteed to work with any of the horrible hardware and drivers that existed in 1996, but it's not 1996 any more so use the video options menu to select a better one.

The software Quake codebase is also positively riddled with compatibility hacks for cards that didn't report low resolution modes and similar things that were important in 1996. This mattered when you had a P60 with 8MB of RAM, but these days you'll need to look at using things like the -noautostretch command-line option or the vid_stretch_by_2 cvar.

There used to be a very good readme provided by ID with the WinQuake download (I guess you can still find it on ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com) that detailed all of this stuff. You should take a read of it, identify everything that was a disgusting compatibility hack (most of them are obvious) and disable their asses until they scream for mercy.

Use _windowed_mouse 1 to enable the mouse in windowed mode, by the way.

PS: if you want to try the Direct3D port you could do a whole lot worse than the new release 1.7.1:

            Thanks for the helpfull replies.

MHquake's zQuake did the trick, those were the settings I was talking about.
Now I only need a few models, like the shaft (just 1 stripe, not that electrothingy) and brighter playermodels.

Too bad it just doesn't run smoothly, probably isn't possible (like u said mhQuake), but turning the resolution up helped a little. But I have the feeling I've got a disadvantage by playing in these resolutions..

Mmm, gonna search for some models
