  • darkplaces + quakeworld = very choppy.

Hello, I am new to these forums. I absolutely love darkplaces, it looks fantastic and stays in a great framerate range while its at it. My only gripe with it is the online is choppy as anything. Its like i move normally but the environment around me is lagging behind, not to mention the occasional ping spike. This has absolutely NOTHING to do with framerate, as it is perfectly fine. This shouldn't have anything to do with my method of internet either since being a gamer of course, i play many other games that are more demanding and work fine online.

These servers are playable, i can get a very few frags but its like disorienting. Sometimes i will have a server that loses choppyness after a minute or so of being connected with it sometimes reverting back again. Now on these servers i would ask around to people "whats your rate/ticrate settings, whats your port, this is my problem blah blah". On one server, A few of the players just said "stop bitching, this is how quakeworld really is, no port has changed the netcode because it would break compatibility ect.". So was just convinced that quake in general was just this choppy. Then I simply decided to use the ezQuake client everybody has been using and... WTH? No choppyness!

So my question is, are there any optimal settings for darkplaces online besides that thread for "optimal deathmatch settings" seeing that it shouldn't make any difference being all settings that improve framerate when my framerate is perfectly fine. Just anything online or speed related like rate/ticrate kinda thing. I really want to play with dp online, i don't like how ezquake looks even with the "faithful" setting and theres no bobbing. It pretty much kills the original quake experience. The reason i like dp is it ubers it up but tries to remain faithful. So plz... help.

        Hrmm

Yes it does. It makes it a bit more playable but not perfect really. It does not fix the choppyness. However, it makes it consistent[usually its like ALOT of choppyness and then just some and now its straightforward just some]. Thats kinda hard to notice but the easy one was the fact that i had no more ping spike moments whatsoever. So i guess we're on the right track.

Edit: these 2 commands are examples of what i am looking for.

cl_nodelta 0 disables delta compression of non-player entities in QW network protocol
        cl_nolerp 0 network update smoothing

i forget the actual cvar but in DP u can also tweak the client-side-prediction
cl_move...something? DP IS the HOLYGRAIL of Quake, next comes FTE, then ZQuake, then ez etc... if u wanna play QW style.

yeah i saw something like that.

"cl_movement 0 enables clientside prediction of your player movement"

all the commands can be found here for those of you who can't seem to remember what you want to suggest lol:

I just realized cl_movement was a 0/1 command lol. I tried it and significant improvement! Moving is near perfect, can be a little "slide aroundish" but very rarely. So yeah any other commands to improve online dp?

            Anyone?

well rates of 25000 or whatever the server limits it to [as irritating as the fact that when servers change my rate it isn't temporary, is] plus cl_movement 1 and systicrate .025 seems to work decent for me. Its no ezquake, but it works. So i guess i can kindof say my problem is solved but if you have any other suggestions feel free to post.
