  • WIndows 7 and clients - New

I am aware of all of the threads started about windows 7 and quake clients.
I like mh's DQ i do suffer some frame loss (drops to 15-20) being on a junky laptop, but it serves the purpose of getting me into the game. Thank you very much sir.
PQ 3.50 works somewhat I still get 50+ ping spikes when online only. I guess my question is why does qrack do this...

I understand people are playing qrack on windows 7 now so is it just me or what?

I was going to build one but I heard that Rook was also working on one, so I stopped. He is the "owner" of QRack after all and his work should take priority.

I'm interested in exactly how shitty your laptop is. DirectQ should run quite well on anything with an Intel 910 onwards, but it does need a proper Direct3D 9 card (or alternatively something with a bit of hardware T&L muscle behind it) to really give it's best. All the same, if you're able to run Aero (which it looks like you're running) you should be getting a lot more than 15-20 FPS. I built it and test it all the time on a shitty laptop, after all (and the reason I made it in the first place was so that I could run Quake on my laptop.)

QRack currently crashes because it's using outdated Windows headers and libs (Visual C++ 6). A straightforward recompile of it using a newer compiler, newer headers and libs, etc is all that's needed to make it run.

Anyway, here's an updated D3D8 FitzQuake that might give you better performance. This is quite experimental so don't try anything fancy like changing resolution, just stick with the command-line: Download DirectFitz.zip from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way

I may be confused here which in turn is confusing you

drdpro400 direct one is the one that doesnt work good (I think I learned isnt your work sorry) when rockets are fired FPS drops to 15-20

I just downloaded the dx8pro400 (may be your work) works great thanks!

I also downloaded the directq now that I see is your work it looks good, but my quake guy just aims at the sky and turns circles and it is windowed heh so i didnt get to test it yet. I'm sure it will work great!

I downloaded the directjoe and I like it, Would like to know more about its commands and such I like the feel of it alot easier on my laptop for some reason and it looks cool

may try the directfitz next or might just go with dx8pro400, mess around more with yours, or directjoe who knows
          thanks

Heh, aiming at the sky and turning in circles means that my non-DirectInput code is fucked again.

m_directinput 1 should fix it, but if it doesn't it means that DirectInput is somehow failing to start on your machine. I *can* reproduce this bug so it should be fixable.

And do try the new/experimental DirectFitz - the others run quite slowly but that one should be FAST.

Yessir fitz is good. I found with it as well as joequake that my locs don't work so I guess I am difficult. haha

I got a sorta dumb question mainly cause I am uneducated...
are all direct engines designed to run vsync on? or is this an option. I know this laptop has had trouble in the past disabling vsync through quake so it may just be my rig's fault I wonder if my desktops radeon 4670 if i disable vsynv in CCC It will be disabled in the direct engines or do I have to run with vsync

vsync off by default if I remember correctly. I know I get about 200 FPS in timedemo demo1 with the new DirectFitz so that's definitely vsync off. The others are just slow so maybe it looks like vsync on.

By the way, I've released a new DirectQ which fixes the issues you had with it. It only starts up windowed (I reckon it's safer than starting up fullscreen) but you can switch it to fullscreen in the Options/Video Options menu.

Neither FitzQuake nor JoeQuake support locs. It wouldn't be difficult to hack in support, but my goal in doing those ports was to keep things as true to the original as possible.

JoeQuake isn't being actively developed anymore, so don't go looking for more modern features in it. A good place to start with further info on the engine might be the JoeQuake project page here: JoeQuake Project Page

the windows 7 problem isnt just existent in Qrack, its all versions of quake. Qrack works perfect in single player mode. When you connect on any client in windows 7 it just stutters. You get random but constant ping spikes of 50-100+

It does this in GLPro and regular quake as well. You feel like you have terrible Packet loss but it does not show when looking at the stats. I think it has something to do with the older net code and how windows 7 handles it.

you gotta turn off the network throttling feature in the registry . its a setting for the multimedia schedular service in win7 thats suppose to increase the speed of any incoming audio from online and direct it directly into your soundcard from internet. it pulls all sounds directly to the card w/o limits heh. during games u hear rockets nades explosions grunting and splashes all around you from every other player online. of coarse this 'enhancement' is flawed . just another fail for mr. gates.

goto yor regedit in hkeylocalmachine\software\microsoft\windowsnt\curr entversion\multimedia\systemprofile

should be a networkthrottle entry . change it to ffffffff and ok out of it and exit your registry. restart and your good to go and if not then eat a Hindu's resonated asshole for dinner later on.

Yeah man, found this online couple days ago...this and april 28th's release of my 4670 driver fixed the problem brah. I can play proquake 4.0 zeta now with absolutely no stutter. Qrack still peters out but it's ok I've just about transitioned back to proquake from qrack. so anyone I played last month that beat me obviously its because I wasnt used to proquake. Qrack will ruin your proquake game

THANK YOU GLITCH. That stuttering was driving me fucking crazy. I suspected it had to be some obscure new Windows feature. You saved my life. I owe you babies.
