  • Some qrack questions

Hi, i'm a QW player, just starting to play some netquake because it's also fun.

    1. ***[SOLVED]*** For r00k, qrack's developer: Can you please send me/upload your hud-numbers please?

    2. ***[SOLVED]*** When i launch qrack my mouse's sensitivity gets ****ed, in Windows and also in every game i try to play. I have to reboot in order to get my sens back. Why that and how to fix this? It also happens in proquke, which makes me don't wanna play nq because i know i would need to reboot after playing :I

    3. I can't configure 800x600, 32bpp at 150Hz, console says that is not a valid fullscreen mode.

    4. The qrack client crashes if i try to connect a server and let it autodownload the map.

    5. ***[SOLVED]*** After closing my client, windows' gamma is brighter and i have to change it in nVidia control panel.

    hey thulu,

If you don't mind straying from your topic, how is QW? What are the pros/cons vs NQ?

Well, it's really faster, it's easier to aim and it's much more customizable. Community is much bigger, specially in Europe. That's pros. Cons, the most noticeable is the skill level, is way too hight. So, sometimes it's fun for me to play some netquake, because it's more relaxing, skill level is lower but somehow is harder to aim (in QW enemies are flashing green and yellow dudes withouth shadows, and we have fakeshaft and some new thing called antilag, which makes you hit the shaft exactly in the middle of your crosshair, no matter your ping)

My main game will be QW for ever, i think, but play some casual games in netquake is cool! Also you kinda learn some stuff about QW, seriously, because i have to change totally the way i play the maps that i played hundreds of times in QW.

Anyway, i'll suggest you to try it yourself

thulu, try adding -noforcemparms to the commandline when you launch Qrack. This fixed the windows accel issue for me. Also, you don't have to restart the computer to fix it. Just go to control panel, mouse, pointer options, and turn off "enhanced pointer precision". The problem is that Qrack sometimes turns this on upon exiting.

I've seen this when you crash out of qrack but not usually when you come cleanly out of it. I doubt this will solve your problem but when this happens to me I run Lord Havoc's set gamma utility and it tends to sort it out immediately. Hope this makes it a bit more bearable until you sort your problem

              Kind regards

                -noforcemparms works for me too.

Weird, it reads from the driver whats available, maybe lower the Hz.

This has been fixed in the next version, (i hope), if the map is truely at the web_url it works otherwise the monkies get loose.

setgamma works like a champ. I keep it on my desktop

As far as QW goes, I've played it at 30 ping and it just feels weird (maybe needs tweaking my cfg), projectiles are not interpolated, physics are not equal to local singleplayer. Anything under 50 ping feels FINE for netQuake. Antilag is a joke imho, the knockback shouldnt exceed the average between the HPB & LPB ping times, ie (150ms + 50ms) / 2 = 100ms window of opportunity), instead the HPB has 150ms, in this case, which is 3 frames the lpb recieved. I get hit by invisible rockets in my tests...

-Yes that works but, you know, the higher the refresh rate, the more smooth the game runs. I have no problem with 800x600x150 in other games/ nor in windows resolutions, so i don't know why i can't use it in nq.

-I coudln't agree more, that's why its fun for me to play some netquake, because in most quakeworld servers shafting is just too easy. I don't like antilag myself (Word from an HPB who is doing more than 40% no matter the ping i get)

Thanks for the numbers too, some quakeworld players are willing to use them, so i think there's no problem in posting the numbers @ QuakeWorld GFX - Download QW graphics & custom maps let me know if you don't want me to post 'em.

Higher refresh rate is just one factor here, and is more of a QuakeWorld thing than a NetQuake thing too (a lot of the "rules" that apply to QW don't really apply to NetQuake owing to the totally differrent engine architecture). You can get the same higher framerates in NetQuake by turning off vsync and setting cl_maxfps to a sufficiently high number. A lot of the NetQuake community (for example the SpeedDemos folks) consider running at > 72 FPS to be cheating as it gives you different physics.

QRack uses the same APIs for it's video modes as QW does, and having just had a look over the code, I for one don't see anything in it that could prevent it from setting a 150 Hz rate. The main thing that does spring to mind is that the other games that allow you to set it might use D3D, which does this part of video startup quite differently.

Another option might be to set a really large windowed mode; it should use the same refresh rate as your desktop then.

But for the authentic NetQuake experience you shouldn't be running at higher than 72 FPS anyway.

If i try to run my desktop @ 800x600 150Hz and i try to open Qrack i get a messagebox: Specified video mode not available.

And in Qrack menu the highest refreshrate i can select is 85Hz, and if i try a higher value using vid_refreshrate i get "bla bla bla is not a valid fullscreen mode"

the hud numbers are bootleg warsow images that I tweaked and added a red colored number set. The style is so generic i doubt they would complain. I can remake them if anyone wets the bed over it.

if the menu shows the refresh you wish as an option and reports this then its my fault, or the driver is falsely stating the support, (generic monitor driver).

Otherwise think about it this way, your mouse has a 125hz refresh (for example) why amp up your fps beyond what your turning rate updates will provide. Standing still facing forward no fps chop , turn and the whole world will be changed, showing the jump from frame to frame. Just keep it around 100 -125 is fine, 500hz mouse hacks dont apply

Although, they don't make 'em anymore. The ones on Amazon are from other sellers. I hear that Razer makes better gaming mouses now.
