  • DirectQ textures/models/music

Sup guys, after finishing the 4 episodes on this engine I must say it's awesome, Im playing on a shitty vaio with intel chipset, and I had no fps drops or watsoever. I just wondering if DirectQ supports the use of new textures or models? I don't want anything fancy, just let's say monster to look different, it doesn't have to be HD or something... also what about the music? can I use other mp3 as BGM? or do I neet to convert to another format? also, how can I load new textures/models in directQ? (if supported)

Your engine rocks, it runs smoothly on a vaio with a celeron processor and 512 in ram 915gm/s intel chipset and it run on 1027x768 (desktop setting) at full speed no matter how many enemyes/particles/lights are in the screen at the same time (I play on nightmare btw)

    Thank you.

It was an Intel 915 that I did most of the initial work on, and a lot of time was spent making sure that it ran well on the 915, so it's great to see someone else getting a good game of Quake on the same chip.

    Anyway, to your questions.

Textures: yes. I have what I think is all you need to know about textures documented here: mhquake: Using Replacement Textures

Models: no (although you can put textures on them - see above). Some day I might add MD3 support (it seems at least reasonably standard), but this is a matter of personal taste and right now I don't like most of the MD3s that are floating around.

Music: yes. If you can play it in Windows Media Player, DirectQ can play it. Go to C:\Quake (or whereever you have Quake installed), open ID1, create a folder called "Music" (I think you may already have these steps done ) and put your files in there. It doesn't matter what you call them so long as the display order matches the order you want them in. So the first track will replace the Necropolis demo music, the second will replace the intermission music, and so on.

You can also use C:\Quake\ID1\sound\cdtracks if you want.

If you've already replaced the music in ID1 and don't want to overwrite it you can create an additional game directory parallel to ID1 and set things up in there. Just use the "game" command to switch to it.

Ok, one last thing, I need to report a little bug (I hope it doesn't have anything to do with my notebook)

When I load directQ, first it shows me the "loading" bar right? and then it goes to the demo. when I press "escape" key to bring the menu (single player, etc) it throws me to the desktop, ok, The program doesn't close at all, it just send me to my desktop as if I used the alt+tab or win+D button combination, If I click the directQ tab in the taskbar, it takes me to the game again. Btw this never happen again while I playing, I can press esc all the times that I want (in fact they are many since I play on nightmare and I die a lot) only the first time that I load the application, Im runing it at 1280x800x32 (wich happens to be my desktop resolution too) at fullscreen, with almost everything set up to the highest (pixel shading, dinamics light, anisotropic filter x 4, etc) (It doesn't bother me at all, but I find it weird) oh! I almost forgot, I never had this bug with DirectQ 1.8.4 it started with 1.8.666 (1,2,3rd candidate and full) any ideas?

All I know is that CTRL+ESC == ALT+TAB so maybe your CTRL key is sticky That and 1.8.666 (all versions including final) tends to crash when clicking on the icon in taskbar after you ALT+TAB'd out of the game in fullscreen.. and on loading a new map sometimes..

          thanks for the advice!

Just checked about my ctrl keys, and no, they are fine (one would never know, specially with an old notebook, right?) also the problem is not the application crashing, it doesn't crash at all, is when I load it,the first time that I press escape, it send me to my desktop... but then again, I can press esc as many times as i want and nothing, no problem at all... kinda weird, huh?

PS: I was all exited downloading a normal map texture pack (from the quake retexture project), and when I was reading your link for help I came across "not supported: normal maps" haha owned. anyway thanks for the swiftness of reply and all your help. Oh and coding a kick-ass engine like directQ!

That's really odd that it does that (both the desktop thing and the crash thing). I've honestly not been able to reproduce these bugs myself so I can't really say what could be happening here. They are important though so I might take some time out to do some further testing. If I can get a handle on what could be happening I'll definitely be releasing a patched version.

to reproduce the bug all you have to do is

              start directq
              wait the "loading" bar
as soon as the demo starts press ESC

and that's it, it'll send me directly to my desktop, y click on the directq tab, and the game is there no problem, and I can press esc as many times as posible, if i could record a video of my desktop i would do it inmediately, do you recomend some software?

Doesn't happen for me, which is really weird. I don't doubt you one bit here, and don't need a video, I just need to get the chance to run it on a few different machines and expect I'll be able to catch what's going on then.
