  • Feeling lost with Darkplaces :|

    Hey guys.

    So here's my problemo. I used to be an avid Darkplaces player. I had all the latest and greatest looking mods, weapon models, item models, monster skins, textures, etc... Problem is, I honestly have no idea what I did with all those mods or how they fit together. I've been googling for hours on end trying to recover them all and make Darkplaces sexy again, but with no fruits for my labour

    So, I've come to you guys for help on that.

    Thus far I've got:
    1. The Darkplaces engine (durr)
    2. dpmod (what exactly does this do and how do I install it? I put the RT lights from it into my ID1 folder but I didn't see any difference)
    3. Rygel's texture pack (if anyone knows of a more complete/better texture pack please speak up!)
    4. Romi's RT lights
    5. The monster skins from Quake Reforged (these look AMAZING, makes me forget about how horribly polygonal MD1 models are )

    However I'm having trouble hunting for:
    1. There was this really shiny GUI for Darkplaces, made the lettering all chromey and shite... I can't really describe it better than that. :/ Found this screenshot of on my PC:
    2. A set of weapon models (specifically, the ones seen here: http://quakeone.com/forums/quake-tal...arkplaces.html)
    3. A set of item models (health, ammo, armor, etc)

    I'm sorry if I'm being kind of cryptic... But I'm REALLY tired from searching for hours

    Anyways if anyone can help point me in the right direction I would be thankful beyond words! Because I'm totally overwhlemed here. It seems to me the Quake restoration scene as a whole is rather rag tag right now. I remember the Shub-hub, which was a nexus of goodies, was down? I was like, yikes! But I'm rambling.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~tl;dr:
    I could use some help in finding the packs and such to make darkplaces sexy again (check the numbered lists). If you have any suggestions as to better packs, etc than the ones I suggested, please fire away!
    Thanks for taking some time to read this and thank you if you help!
    Moon[Drunk] has historically been the maker of all the good looking HUD elements for Quake/Quakeworld.
    His site is at:
    www.moondrunk.se
    I don't think they world with DarkPlaces "out of the box", though.
    Personally, I think it would be best to start a "How do I make a cool HUD with DarkPlaces" thread at Inside3d.com where a whole beehive of DarkPlaces-knowledgeable people hang out. Ask them how to name the HUD graphics and which folder and such.
    Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.
    So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...
      Hello Brock,
      it seems, that everything you need to get the screenshots setup is already in your hands:
      To get the screenshot look you only need 2 things:
      - Darkplaces build (thats what you already have)
      - Rygels Pack (thats what you already have as well)
      In Rygels pack these things are already included:
      - The HUD, which you want
      - The weapons and ammo boxes (and others you mentioned) skins
      Important thing is:
      Dont use dpmod, or otherwise many skins will be used from dpmod instead of Rygel.
      So make a clean Quake install, update to 1.06 and put Darkplaces in it.
      After that just drop Rygels Pack (if you have it as a pk3) into id1 folder.
      Thats it. Start Darkplaces.exe and you will find your Quake look like your screenshot.
      To tweak it, you surely have to turn on some features in your options:
      - like RT World / RT World shadows
      - Parallax mappping (you have to do it via console)
      - Shadow Mapping (you have to do it via console)
      - ... endless things more
      Regarding ROMIs beautiful rtlights (I highly recommend them):
      Put the id1 rtlight (pk3) into your id1 folder.
      The other rtlights (example Mission Pack 1) belongs in hipnotic folder (if you have it).
      Regarding Quake Reforged monster skins:
      Put them into your id1\progs folder
      (I dont remember at the moment, if they have the correct DP format already. But I think so).
      I am at work atm. If you have further questions I will ba happy to answer them this evening.
      Best wishes,
      Seven
      PS: Regarding your other question: To give you alternatives (in texture packs and skins).
      There is for example: QRP High Res project with breathtaking normals.
      If you use Rygels pk3 file and want to use QRP Textures, its is not an easy thing to do:
      You will have to delete Rygels textures out of your pk3 file to make QRP textures (placed in id1\textures folder) visible in-game.
      Because pk3 files overrides the data in game subfolders.
      If you want to know more about it, feel free to ask or PM me.
        Okay well... I can't patch to 1.06... As I'm running 64 bit Windows 7. Tried running the patch.exe in Compatibility mode, through command prompt, even tried Dosbox. none worked. Is there any other way to patch this bastard? Or is it even really that necessary?
          Update: Going to try using Virtual PC 2007 to run the patch. 16bit progs should work for 32bit XP
            Update: That didn't work either... Ideas? Anyone else figure out how to patch Quake to 1.06 on Windows 7 64?
                The Virtual Machine wouldn't install, I tried dozens of keys but said all were invalid.
                  Hi Brock,
                  I know that the update cannot be run in Win7 64bit.
                  The Update 1.06 alters your pak0.pak.
                  So all you need is an updated pak0.pak.
                  You can throw your Quake on a USB stick and update Quake on any other
                  computer (family / friend), and then simply copy over the updated pak0.pak
                  back to your rig.
                  Hope I could help...
                      Glad you managed it Brock.
                      Now on with your question from above (tweak DP a little more).
                      Please visit these threads to find additional things, which you may like:
                      - darkplaces-hd-remastering-packs (post #9)
                      - making-darkplaces-even-more-beautiful
                      - Be sure to type this in your console (only once. it will be saved in config.cfg then)
                      1.) (for improved shadows) set r_shadow_shadowmapping 1
                      2.) (for Parallax Mapping) set r_glsl_offsetmapping 1
                      Now have fun with your Quake Brock.
                        Actually there's only one more thing I'm missing... I downloaded the vispatch water thing (the pack that gives you supposedly clear reflective water... And it doesn't seem to work. Either it's a complete mirror, or a regular old texture, completely opaque.
                          If it was XP SP3 you should be able to install it without a key, otherwise you can install DosBox on a Linux VM. Academic because you got it working, but may be useful to know for anyone else who has the same prob and comes across this thread.
                            Indeed! But, does anyone know how to make it so the water looks like it ought to? Not a mirror of the sky?
                              hmmm...
                              I think you need to VISpatch your id1 maps before "Pretty Water for DP" works.
                              Your original Quake Maps are not VISpatched.
                              Also make sure, that you use latest DP build and "Pretty Water for DP" Ver.0.2 or newer.
                              But I might be wrong.
                              There are several ways to VISpatch your maps.
                              Due to Win7 64, I dont know which one will work for you.
                              If I am not wrong, Baker made a thread about VISpatching and a TUT (or was it the_f0qer ?).
                              You will find it in this forum.
                              Anyhow, in the end it must look like this: dp-water
                              Best wishes,
