Words fail to describe and these ss dont do it justice either but I will try.
The water is more opaque the farther you are from the surface so it looks like solid slime from upper deck.
Players fade into view just as they surface giving a realism thats kina spooky....

Some players argued that it was advantageous to have as it's easier to distinguish players against a wall with a complex texture.
gl_picmip would be the next best option...
or gl_max_size 1 makes everything flat
