  • New DarkPlaces beta released

    Hello,

just wanted to inform you, that LordHavoc released a couple of new betas:
    darkplacesengine20101118beta1.zip
    darkplacesengine20101118beta2.zip
    darkplacesengine20101121beta1.zip

Unfortunately the bug with Plasma Gun in Mission Pack 2 is still there.

These things I noticed during a first test run:
    - FPS dropped (compared to darkplacesengine20100831beta2.zip) around 10%.
    - Shader look different now (like DP New Teleport)

    Kind Regards,
    Seven

I noticed on a nightly build some ODE cvars which tells me future support for ODE physics!

The great problem in darkplaces is still Realtime lightning + "Pretty Water". there is a gigantic FPS loss...

I agree, both drops my fps down half. Normaly i would have 180-200 FPS or so, i switch on realtime lightning it goes down to about 90-100 FPS and if i use also pretty water it drops down to 35-50.

Same thing here. But I think it will be tough getting around those problems. Hell, my newer laptop drops to about 4 fps just by turning on RTL. Considering all of the high res textures, models, etc that we can run now, Im just impressed that it is still playable with all that. Then on top of those things, RTL, "Pretty water" , and the new teleports.

Sure, but if you compare with the machines that was "state of the art" back when quake was released and the machines we have now it is unbelievable more power. I guess i had a AMD K5 DX-133 running at 166MHz. So all the power got lost for the prettiness.

              Hello guys,

              dont whine about it
If you want to play Quake with DP, you can do it without the bells and whistles,
and have a very high FPS with a fair/good look.
If you want to have the modern look with RT World and other gimmicks, you have to pay for it
I dont know, if other engines have comparable looks like DarkPlaces with those features "on".
I guess not, so you can only compare DarkPlaces with other modern shooter engines.
With those new games/engines you will also have FPS around 50.

              But now seriously:
If you look at the hardware from LordHavoc, you will notice, that he has only the best pieces
              available on the market.
So I guess he has no FPS problems

So, draw your conclusions and spend a few dollars for a midrange PC.

              Kind Regards,
              Seven

                  Hello,

I regularly visit LordHavocs page and keep an eye on his betas and autobuilds.

Now something important and worth mentioning happened !

Since I started this thread (as the november betas have been released) the autobuilds from december and january have been inconspicuously (except the fact, that "DP Pretty Water" issue has been solved).

But then the autobuild from 20110203 came out !

Man, I must say that this is a milestone.

                  FPS has been increased by 20% - 50% !
(I tested almost all ID1 and mission pack maps)

No negative things to tell (I am using them since february 4th).

If you play Darkplaces, you simply HAVE to download this build !

                  Interesting thing:
LH created autobuilds almost every second day in january. Then, after this special autobuild (february 3rd) no new build have been created.
This smells like its time for a new beta or maybe even a new "stable" version...

                  Anyhow, go download it.

                  Kind Regards,
                  Seven

                          Hello,

I recieved a note today, that there is a new DP beta build.
                          - from 20110224
                          - from 20110225

Unfortunately both beta builds (as well as autobuilds between 13th - 25th february)
have a graphical issue (weapon edges are black).

The DarkPlaces build (that I highly recommended) from 3rd february 2011 is no longer available (because it was an autobuild; and autobuilds are always overwritten).

So I uploaded it to Quaketastic for your convenience. (it is the multi-OS version)

                          Kind regards,
                          Seven

I noticed a speed boost but I didn't do any benchmarking, but it was definitely noticeable.

Seven: I don't notice any black markings around weapon edges... I'm using stock ID1 stuff.

The performance boost is great though . Now I can play with ridiculous values of cl_decals_time to make the map bloodied forever, heheh
