  • [Darkplaces] Low FPS in Scourge of Armagon

    Hello to everybody.

I am having some problems with Darkplaces Client and Scourge of Armagon.
In this mission pack i am experiencing low fps in almost every level.
There are some weird spots in the levels, that drop my FPS to 18 (see screenshot).
In Research Facility (e1m4) level almost half of it have those low FPS spots.

    Effects
and Lighting are both on High and i am using 1680x1050 resolution (Both AA and AF are set on ''1")
I'm using only Darkplaces Client (no textures or model mods)

    My PC Overview.

    PS: Please excuse my English.

Our PC's are about the same specs wise. I get the same thing. Real-Time lighting is what the killer is. Turn it off and your FPS will go up alot.

Do you have the rtlights files for Scourge of Armagon installed? rtlights files dramatically increase performance with RT world enabled as well as look much nicer. Heres the link:

      http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplac...lights_soa.pk3

Just throw that in your quake\id1 folder and you should be good to go.

In my experience, maps without rtlights either run decently or run very slowly with RT world on. And I have a Phenom II x2 550 processor overclocked to 3.72 ghz, and a Radeon HD 5870... Some custom maps have odd slowdowns in certain parts even without RT world on.

I suspect that your problem is dynamic lighting. The room behind that door has a number of lightning bolts going off, as well as flashing lightstyles and a great big hole in the middle of it that also has dynamic lighting.

            Hello Quarrion,

bta.monster wrote, that you should put Romis rtlights into Quake\ID1.
            That is not quite correct.
The linked SoA rtlight file must be placed into your Hipnotic folder.
            By default it is: Quake\hipnotic
Please put the .pk3 file in there.

            Reason:
Mission Pack 1 starts also with a "Start" map.
So, if you put the SoA into ID1, original Quake levels will use this rtlight as well.
So your ID1 "start" map will look really wired.

It might not solve your issue, but I just wanted to tell you.

Regarding "RT World" on or off:
Simply go into Customize Lighting to check it.
Just like ooppee said: Turning it on will bring your PC to its knees.

In your case, starting with a new config would be a good start.
Changing the ingame options one by one to find out when your FPS start to drop.
To do it, simply rename your current config.cfg to something like con__fig.cfg

            Kind Regards,
            Seven

                So that means:
You have no FPS difference with settings on "low" compared to setting on "high" ?
And no difference with RT world "on" or "off" ?
In every condition you have the low FPS ?
I cannot read anything about it in your latest post Quarrion.

What is the average FPS in your original Quake (no mission pack) ?
Are the options settings the same in Quake and SoA ?
(You could compare your configs line by line)

                Regards,
                Seven

A: Between High and Low settings there is almost no difference. Only Full lighting makes trouble (that's why i don't use it)
A: Well... RT World only make it worse.
A: Only in those weird spots in the levels.
                  A: 200-500 FPS.
A: Absolutely the same. See my first post.

I've tried already fumbling with the option menu.
This is why i am making this topic here.
                  I can't fix it by myself :S

                    Thanks for your answers.

The last thing I could imagine is:
You are using an outdated version of DarkPlaces.
You maybe didnt know that LordHavoc implemented small engine bugfixes
for the most common maps / Episodes (just like SoA + DoE).

Maybe, if you try the version I generally recommend, your problem is solved.

                    Please try this build.

                    Kind Regards,
                    Seven

Just tried it out in that same spot with the latest DP build, and the only way I could get it to drop below 60 FPS was to ramp bloom resolution all the way up to 2048. This is with everything else maxed out.

So check your bloom resolution in the Options | Customize Lighting menu I would say.
