  • Painskins are in...kinda (Darkplaces)

Might be old news but talks of painskins have been mentioned a few times on the forums.
    While browsing inside3d.com's forums "cl_decals_models 1"
This allows decals to ALSO get applied onto the models. I tested it out by sneaking up on a Shambler (well using Notarget) on e1m3 and shot him in the back with the super shotgun. He had a nice bloody back for the rest of the battle.
Other things too, explosion happens near a corpse - the decal also gets partially applied. Shoot a enemy beside a corpse - corpse gets bloodier (haven't been able to fully test it out if blood from another will splatter onto another live enemy)
Needless to say this is my new favorite console command in Darkplaces

    Hello ooppee,

    Thank you for mentioning it.
I must say, that this effect does not work 100% in every situation/circumstance.

But on some monsters in some circumstances it works.

Then the bloodbath will look like this:

    cvar "0":

    cvar "1":

    Kind Regards,
    Seven

I think LordHavok limited the decals on models - as like you said it isn't always 100%. It's worked on every enemy I've encountered thus far - but not on every shot (which is great though as it shouldn't be). There might be a command to increase the decal limit on models?

Nice work. Keep it up guys!

I don't suppose you have any painskins for that could be used for player models? The reason I ask that there's a Quake [One] painkeep server in Europe (Flanders.servegame.org port 26003) that already has the graduated painkins feature but the graphics are a little.. well... dated in some areas. LockNLoad has already kindly contributed a skin for the exploding shells and if there was a player painskin the users could drop in and play with it any of the major clients would really add a dose of realism to the server.

          Thanks in anticipation

            Hello Mr.Burns,

            maybe there is a misunderstanding.
The thread title is maybe misleading.

            DarkPlaces does not have/use "painskins".
My screenshots above show blood decals, that stick on the model.
That is a diferent engine behaviour.

In Quake 2 for example, the engine calculates the damage taken to a enemy.
If a specific damage value has reached, the engine changes the complete skin for the model.
That is what you can call a "Painskin".

            DP is different:
When you shoot something, a blood-decal is spawned.
This decal "sticks" on the model. Just like it does on walls !
So, to be clear, DarkPlaces doesnt have "painskins".
It simply sticks blood-decals on the enemy/walls.

Thats why we cannot move this feature to another engine,
            cause its not a "texture.tga"

Maybe OoPpEe can rename this thread to be more clear.

            Kind regards,
            Seven

Thanks for taking the time to reply Seven. It's probably a misunderstanding, and perhaps a little wishful thinking , on my part so don't worry about changing the thread.

              kind regards

                hey

nice tip ooppee...this effect looks good and should be on by default.

                regards,

                Sean

It would be possible for Darkplaces to have better pain effects. With the blood decals (and explosion) able to be applied onto a model (fire a few rockets at a ammo crate) we could have better effects. This would however require a slight DP edit where the bullet hole and explosion decals get applied to the model with a alternate skin (blood/burnt flesh). However this is a great start and will do for a long time
