  • DarkPlaces - RT Lights = Low FPS?

    Hey guys,

I try to avoid posting something that's already been talked about, and yes, I did a search, and I did as the instructions said both on this forums and on the readme.txt.

I'm using DarkPlaces, and whenever I have RT Lights on, with the shadows options, my computer's FPS drops down to 12 FPS. I copied Inkub's rtlights into ID1 folder and I notice nothing -- no difference at all. Am I missing some sort of CVAR here or something?

I see alot of users on this forum using Parallax Mapping and getting about 60FPS.. yet, when I use it, I get 5. I feel left out.

.. and just to drive a point, I'm using an Intel Core i3 530 (2.93 GHz), a GeForce GTX 260, 6 GB of ram and Windows 7 x64.

    Welcome aboard Asukalution,

you have good hardware, so no, it is NOT normal, that you get 12 fps in Darkplaces with RT world and shadows on.
Of course RT World brings your computer to its knees !
But your hardware should be able to handle it.

First of all, you must check your DarkPlaces build version.
Make sure, that you use a newer build.
This is a special version for 64-bit.
For all other OS try this.

Secondly, it is your config.cfgs fault that your FPS drop.
So you have to go through it and delete/edit all the things that are not necessary or causing your drop.
A good thing would be to start with a NEW one.
Do this by renaming your current to "config_old.cfg" and start DP again.
Make sure you dont use any mods or autoexec.cfgs.
Maybe try mine temporary to see if it helps.

    Third thing:
Do you use external textures ? I think about Rygels "Ultra" pack.
If so, this will drow you down quite a lot.
If you want to use Rygels pack, I always recommend his "High" pack.
You maybe want to try QRPs texture pack here.

    Fourth thing:
Put the correct rtlights files in the correct subfolders.
rtlights for the mission packs belong in the mission pack subfolders.
You can try Romis rtlights (maybe they help in your special case).
Put them into your ID1 folder.

You hardware is quite similar to mine.
You should get around 40 to 100 just like me.
I even use DP pretty water and DP New Teleport and have the mentioned FPS.

Hoping I could help a bit.

    Kind Regards,
    Seven

      Thanks, Seven.

I'm currently using the Quake Rexture for the textures, Weapons Equipped, Objects, Powerups (link gave by Inkub) and the Shader Animated Boxes (Ammo, ect)

I'm trying out your .cfg right now, since I believe that's the culprit.

Thanks again, Seven, your .cfg fixed the issue. I'm getting between 70-120 FPS (Depending on the scene, maybe lower), better than the crawling 5-15.

Of course, and I can say the same for the DooM Community, which I am a part of. I will be sticking around, after reading around on the forums here, the people here are mature folks.

Ah only mature until a certain "imp" -k's name is mentioned. Just avoid that topic and maturity will stay present lol
