  • Engine X 4.64: Cannot connect to servers

Hey all, it's been a while, I noticed this new client on the frontpage and decided to give it a try. Initially I was able to connect to a server once or twice after a few attemps, but it does not connect at all anymore. It says "Trying..." and then crashes.

I added the program to my firewall's trusted programs, I even tried connecting with the firewall turned off. Kimp suggested adding -ip ipaddress to my cmd line but this did not work either. GLPro connects fine with the firewall turned on/off.

Any ideas what can be causing this?

Continue asking kimp for assistance, he's one smart cookie.

        My understanding goes like this:

Engine X is by definition pretty experimental. Stuff can be expected to not work in it. Baker is currently working on a new version which seems due for release shortly (and shortly means weeks, not hours or days). So if you want to use it you're best off waiting till then.

He might be aware of this problem and if so I'm sure he will do his best to fix it. If not I'm sure he will appreciate the report. But a fixed version won't be forthcoming until the new release happens.

I would like to apologize kathos.

I just found it really fucking uncool you'd even acknowledge such a peice of trash like kimp, especially considering that I wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire. I'm even a bit appauled you'd even consider his knowledge of Quake1 worth anything except a good laugh.... because seriously. Kimp??

In the future, might I save anyone else the same attitude by suggesting you not listen or kimp, and definately dont ask him anything, except to hurry up and DIAF

Engine X in the released form is (extremely) obsolete.

That being said, the network code is ProQuake identical and there is no different between ProQuake and Engine X in the network connectivity department.

Engine X in any of the previously released forms is obsolete and experimental and only the upcoming June 22 release matters to me.

I will wait for the official release then. Up to now, I really like the look & feel of the client. Keep up the good work!

You can try this..sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt.
After you try to connect and you see its not connecting quickly type "say"
                and hit enter.

Thanks ... yeah I think most people will at a minimum be "very happy" with the next release.

Please don't make unsubstantiated guesses. That is to force a connection via NAT for shitty old GLQuake. Engine X, like ProQuake and Qrack and JoeQuake is NAT fixed and always has been.

It is not an unsubstantiated guess, it has worked for me on numerous clients
If it works for glquake its news to me since I have not run it in years.
The only way for me to connect to the box in chicago on Qrack was to do this.
                    All this year.
However The newest Qrack beta wont connect there at all.

Kathos doesn't actually have a "can't connect issue". Some combination of settings is causing the client to *crash* upon map load.

It looks like it isn't connecting if you think about it that way, but what is really happening is that some client setting or feature is causing the client to crash on map load.

If you have a connectivity issue, trying to connect to a server doesn't crash you. It just doesn't connect.

The previous versions (like the ones before the upcoming one) were more like idea prototypes and didn't go through the proper gauntlet of testing (like say ProQuake releases did, for the most part) and were more or less to get some ideas out there.

The next version of Engine X has more change than most people would ever expect and some highly weird features.

[A couple of people know the "feature list" of the release, but they haven't actually used it to visualize how unconventional it really is. I imagine like a week before the release I'll release a couple of shots.]
