  • Darkplaces doesn't work

Remembered how cool DP was, way back when, thought I'd try for the umpteenth time to actually finish Quake.
Download latest version of DP; unzip into my c:\games\quake directory; run darkplaces.exe ...

"You have reached this menu due to missing or unlocatable content/data
You may consider adding -basedir... etc"
Created shortcut that looks like this:
    C:\Games\QUAKE\darkplaces.exe -basedir C:\Games\quake

    Nothing.

    Umm. Wut.

I've seen other solutions to this problem, and invariably the n00b (me, in this case) unzips DP into the ...\quake\ directory and everything's fine. Whatever's wrong, it's not working for me!

What am I doing wrong here?? I just wanted to play Quake under Win7x64! :--[

Well, that's exactly the message you get when you have no ID1 folder. You need at least PAK0.PAK inside the C:\Games\Quake\ID1 folder to make it work. Buy Quake. If you own it allready PAK0.PAK and PAK1.PAK should go into the C:\Games\Quake\ID1 folder and dp should go into the C:\Games\Quake\ folder. You don't need to use the basedir shortcut. Just make a shortcut which leads to C:\Games\Quake\darkplaces.exe . Runs also fine under W7X64.

      Hello thesorehead,

you seem to use "Rygels ultra".pk3 pack.
You shouldnt do that. The file is corrupted.

Take the .pk3 out of your ID1 and start Darkplaces (without your shortcut extension)
      And it will work.

What you can do now is (if you want to stick to Rygels pack):
      - Use Rygels high pack
      - Extract the "ultra" pack directly into your ID1

      Both ways will work.

      Regards,
      Seven

I may also be syntax you show your shortcut as:
        C:\Games\QUAKE\darkplaces.exe -basedir C:\Games\quake

mine works without the basedir cmd in a non default location as:
        C:\darkplaces\darkplaces.exe -game dpmod -zone 2048 -mem 256
notice the space between .exe and the switch:
Yours appears to be missing this space between the program and switch resulting in it not being found.

Hmm, I thought i'd load up DP for fun, but for some reason my cfg isnt working. I have DP.cfg with all my settings and keys bound but when I type exec dp.cfg none of the keys get bound, is there a cvar to ignore binding??

DP will even start with the corrupted pack, that shouldn't be the problem. I tried and it starts but some textures and stuff (torches etc.) are missing. I tried to only unpack dp in an empty folder and startet it and got exactly the same message that he posted.

FFS WHY is the very first assumption in these threads that the OP hasn't bought Quake? I will check the contents when I get home from work but this is a copy of the directory that was created when I ran install.bat off my original game CD. Win7 won't run said .bat file, so I've held on to the folder from a previous install.

I'm not using any texture or model packs, extra map packs or anything. I just want to get the game going!

the first assumption being that you don't have a copy of quake is because the engine can't find a copy.
Just follow the 'if you own it already' part.

Its also possible that your C:\Games\Quake\ID1\pak0.pak file is corrupt somehow, or its just missing, because you didn't follow the 'if you own it already' part properly.
If you need to reinstall it, try reinstalling it using dosbox or something. Either way, any 3rd-party engine needs only pak0.pak and pak1.pak in the correct place.

OK, will use DOSbox to reinstall and get a fresh /quake/ folder.

Just realised that there's a patch available - is this important? I don't know what version I have at home but does it matter re: getting Darkplaces to work?

Yes, use Dosbox to extract the game from the original CD, oldschool style. The patch for quake patches only the quake.exe (as far as i know) and not the PAKs so you don't need it. The Version isn't important as lang as it's a full version of quake 1.

Download and install DOSBox from http://www.dosbox.com/
Create a folder on the root of your C drive called QSetup, i.e. C:\QSetup
Copy the contents of your Quake CD to this folder
                      Run DOSBox
Type "mount C C:\QSetup" (without quotes) and press return
Type "C:" (without quotes) and press return
Type "install" (without quotes) and press return
Run through the Quake installer - select to install on your C drive and take the default folder. This will be very slow.
Press any key to enter Quake when prompted, then exit Quake immediately.
The text in DOSBox can be corrupted after you exit Quake, so kill it by closing the window (you might need to Alt-Tab away and then Alt-Tab back to restore your mouse pointer here).
Open your C drive in My Computer or Explorer.
                      Open the QSetup folder
Open the Quake (or Quake_sw) folder.
Copy everything from here to C:\Quake (or wherever you want Quake's permanent home to be).
Delete the C:\QSetup folder - you don't need it any more.
Burn the C:\Quake (or whatever) folder to CD to make sure you never have to do this again.
Delete everything from the C:\Quake (or whatever) folder except for the "ID1" subfolder.
Download a modern Quake engine such as ProQuake, FitzQuake, QRack, JoeQuake or DarkPlaces (better yet, download all 5) and follow the readme for them to get them working.

                      done.

If you have the DOS CD it is most likely that your Quake is not updated to 1.06.

You should update your Quake to 1.06.
It will update your pak file !
(the update itself can unfortunately not be run in Win7 64. So you have to use a workaround (DOSBox))

Update 1.08 is not necessary because it is only the updated quake.exe.
Which you dont need when you are using an engine like DarkPlaces.

                        grave_digga,
when you use Rygels "ultra" pack via the .pk3 file you will get the error that thesorehead mentioned when you escape to main menue:
"You have reached this menu due to missing or unlocatable content/data
You may consider adding -basedir... etc"
                        Extracting its content will work.

But now we know that thesorehead doesnt use it. So it is a different issue.

Well i did not get the message as i tried the ultra pack but it really doesn't matter. The patch really updates the PAK file? I've patched it as i got the game off my CD but i didn't remember what was exactly patched.

The CFGS have to be in the ID1 folder I have found - dont know why that is, even if you run -game option. At least thats what the version I have does.

I also noticed some releases let you bind the keypad keys, and differentiate from R-L shift key and R-L alt / cntrl keys, (ala Q3) but some do not.
