  • Quake1 and Mission Packs Win7 64bit

Hey Everyone, been out the game for more than 10 years but found all my original Quake CD's and wondered if I can get them to run on my Win7 64 bit OS, even consiered Steam installations. I found all kinds of Vista and non-64 bit stuff in Quake1 Forums but nothing related to Original CD's and 64bit support. I remember getting Quake to run on XP took some work but now I have been out of the gaming arena for so long I dont even know where to start looking. Any links or suggestions to get this running is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your consideration and assistance.

OK, so I will tell everyone how-to

First off, YES, Quake1 and both Mission packs will run in Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. First thing you need to do is Read this DOSBox Install then follow the link to download the DOSBox Windows32 installer, make sure you "run as admin". Once you start DOSBox you may notice that two boxes actually open, do not close either of them but go to the one that has the Z:\ prompt. It is a little tough to figure out the mounting stuff but read the link above carefully and you will get it. Once you mount c: c:\setup you will right click on INSTALL and run as Admin. Install will proceed and finish, opening pak files will take a while even with a 64 bit computer so be patient. At this point the install will finish and quake will start. Exit quake by hitting ESC and Quit and then y. Type exit in DOS box and you are out. At this point you should have a C:\setup\Quake folder. Delete all files in the Quake folder execpt ID1. As many have mentioned this is the only folder you need from the Install, copy this folder, create a new QUAKE folder in your preferred directory and paste the ID1 folder in it. I placed it in C:\QUAKE. Ok now you should have C:\QUAKE\ID1. Browse to your Mission pak CD's and copy the folders ROGUE and HIPNOTIC and place them directly in the C:\QUAKE folder. Your next step is to install ProQuake or DirectQ or whatever engine you are wanting to use. I installed ProQuake which is simply extracting all files in the zip folder to your Quake directory. You will notice several executables. I chose to test mission packs using glpro451. You will need to create two shortcuts so you can add the appropriate switches for the mission packs. Within the Quake folder right click and select new>shortcut then chose C:\QUAKE\glpro451 then click next, name it DOE or SOA or whatever. Now you need to go to Properties of the shortcuts you created and in the target section add -hipnotic or -rogue. Make sure you have a space. It should look like this C:\QUAKE\glpro451.exe -rogue. Thats it. Double click the icon and start playing. You will need to scour the forums to find more switches for resolution and display changes and others, I have not done this yet but the current one that comes up looks pretty good without them.

I was just gonna post that link.

Seems I don't need to update it for the full CD then.
