  • Quake Port With Controller Support?

I want to play Quake single player maps on my Windows XP netbook while on the road. It's not always possible to use the mouse and keyboard only control feels a little clunky.

Does anyone know of a Quake source port with decent controller support?

I use ZDoom for my Doom needs as it's about the only Doom port I can find with good XBox 360 controller options but I've been unlucky looking for a Quake engine with similar support.

    Any help would be appreciated.
I got the phone call at 4 a.m.

I'm thinking either DarkPlaces or FTEQW or both have this. But haven't thought about that much. I'm thinking for sure DarkPlaces does.

why the hell would you wanna play a shooter with a gamepad?

you'll be totally owned by anyone cuz aiming with a joystick is terrible compared to a mouse
      .
are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?

I kinda thought Quake had single player and coop, and could be played with just the keyboard.

Really something Quake needs that FTEQW can already do is split screen 2 player. Why require 2 computers for 2 player?

This would be particularly applicable with 360 controller support because you could sit on the couch and play it.

[One time I played single player with a joystick to see what it was like. Ugh. Unbareable. But I imagine a 360 controller would be better than that.]

Why the hell would you post without reading the OP?

I want to play SINGLE player on the road where it is NOT ALWAYS POSSIBLE TO PLAY WITH A MOUSE...

@ Baker: Thanks for the pointers but I haven't had any luck getting them to run with my 360 controller. Do you think it may be an undocumented feature?

Maybe you could add it to EngineX?? (nudge, nudge!)

It might be. I thought I recalled someone on Inside3d once talking about this but Google doesn't seem to bear this out.

You might have to pursue a less desirable method like mapping it to a joystick or something if in fact this feature does not exist.

In the short term, this isn't likely at all just because of limited time means choices have to be made.

to my knowledge, DirectQ has 360 gamepad support, but I have not tried it since I can't get the latest version to run.

              Although, by adding this:

              joystick "1"
              joyadvanced "1"
              joyadvaxisy "1"
              joyadvaxisx "3"
              joyadvaxisz "4"
              joysidesensitivity "-1.8"
              joyforwardsensitivity "-1.8"
              joyyawsensitivity "-1.8"
              joyadvancedupdate

to my autoexec.cfg file, I can play with a logitech dual action gamepad. Also works for hexen 2. The rest of the keys can be configured in game, but this needs to be autoloaded to enabled the use of a gamepad.

I use up and down on the d pad to look up/down instead of having the right stick have full range. So you will have to configure the proper axis and add it to the file.

The current version is somewhat broken but I've identified the probs and it will be fixed in an update. The "joy_" cvars won't work with a 360 controller because the controller itself works in a fairly different manner (and I need to support a case where someone may have both a joystick and a controller connected); I've a bunch of new cvars all beginning with "xi_" which are relevant.

I always play quake with a gamepad !
Gamepad and quake is my cup of tea

Yea DirectQ should work fine I think , well my sidewinter works just fine with it.
Engine X does the job too for me.
