  • Darkplaces with old computer...

    Hello everybody,

    I have a celeron 500mhz with 768mb ram...

How to setup darkplaces with the much lowest setting to run on this cumputer?
I dont need special effect or great texture, i want use this engine only for playing the game with music, winquake is without... if is possible, how to play with original graphic in dp with music

    Thank

My 3800+ 64bit CPU + 7800GT 256MB video cad has a hard time "truely running" DarkPlaces.

The graphics are just to much. Running DP at medium/low settings it's playable but once you turn on Parallax'ing and stuff (Bumpy walls) my PC craps out.

500Mhz isn't much to work with and I remember GLQuake maxing out a CPU like that years back.

You can try running it in windowed mode 640x480 and then setting the light effects etc. to "Quake" or "Normal" in the menu.

DP isn't really the engine with the best performance out there, even in Quake mode. I'd maybe try DirectQ instead which will be perfectly fine if you don't need any eyecandy and is written for DirectX.

Try a few engines and see which one runs best for you.

Edit: Not sure if DirectQ supports ogg or mp3 music, but you can always have the cd in the drive while playing or burn the ogg tracks to CD and use that.

Quakespasm is your best choice here.

DirectQ needs beefier graphics support than you probably have; I'd agree with the recommendation of QuakeSpasm. You should easily get the classic ID1 content running quite well with that, with the Celeron being perhaps the biggest limiting factor.

I used to use winamp to play the Intro track at all times, it rocked.
