  • DarkPlaces & Surround Sound

    OS: Win7x64
    SND: Creative X-Fi

    anyone found a working combination of Creative ALchemy settings that sounds good?

    I got ALchemy to work with DarkPlaces, and my 5.1 speaker setup is giving me directional sound in-game...
    but it just sounds terrible. sounds noticeably cut out and/or are just outright missing while gaming...

    it makes me want to say screw it and just use the 64-bit version of DarkPlaces and run in stereo...

    my current ALchemy settings are the default settings;
    Buffers: 4
    Duration: 25
    Voice Count: 128

    anyone else tried running DarkPlaces with Creative ALchemy and have some settings or tricks/tips they want to share?

    I've also seen that DarkPlaces engine hasn't had a "stable/official" release in going on a year now... maybe a switch to a directsound alternate (OpenAL? Miles? etc?) would be in the best interest of the project development. idk, not a programmer but so far the sound is the only quirk i've experienced with DP... supporting up to 8 directsound channels doesn't really seem like a benefit since directsound was dropped back when vista came out...

    Have you tried both DarkPlaces.exe and DarkPlaces-SDL.exe?
    Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

    So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

      thanks for the quick reply Baker.
      I just tested out both EXEs and the difference is like night and day.
      DarkPlaces.exe + ALchemy = sounds terrible (Especially noticeable using the super nail gun)
      however, DarkPlaces-SDL + ALchemy = sounds pretty much perfect, the super nail gun rate of fire + corresponding sounds are indistinguishable from the way it sounds without ALchemy.
