  • Whatever happened to Telejano?

Telejano is one of the most advanced Quake engine, and 2 to 3 years ago you heard alot out of it.

"Such examples include: lighting effects, explosion effects, fire particles, sparks fly when bullets hit the walls, you can see lighting caustics under the water, you can see steam coming out from the boiling lava, launched rockets, grenades, and lava balls leave smoke trails behind them, blood looks a lot more realistic, fire bursts out of the lava, httpcustom surface fog, model repeating and fading away (for grass, trees, clouds, etc.), rain effects, snow effects, dungeon lighting effects."

I know Chuck and Zor liked using the client to make Quake movies with it, it had some really interesting special effects for that in particular.

But it has been a long while since I've heard any talk about that engine.

The last release with August 27, 2004. But as far as I know, Telejano still has a lot of features not found in any other engines.

I do know this engine was used as the basis for some other games, I know this was one of them:

I was thinking it was also used as the basis for a space game of some sort, but I can't remember or find anything about that.

I think ode Chuck disappeared, Telejano kind of died. I dont like super advanced clients because ill be honest here, I have trouble getting them set up the way I want them and my video card isn't the best.

I hear ya on that one.

That's why sooner or later I'll finish the JoeQuake Launcher which was initially prompted by realizing I could actually get some real performance out of JoeQuake, but it was a lot of effort getting it setup the first time.

The last few days I have been using DarkPlaces a ton -- I'm getting outstanding performance out of it (beyond ProQuake levels, no kidding), but I've been playing with the settings for 3 days now trying to find the "max" one (it's not just a matter of speed).

And probably I'll do things in this order:

      1. DarkPlaces installer with maxxed DM settings by default in a gamedir to separate DM settings from single player (where you want the full environment and atmosphere).

I'm not kidding when I say I have found an extremely kickass DM setup for it. Lets you pinpoint rockets like no other client I've used.

      2. QRack Launcher. A lite QRack launcher with the basic commandline parameters and whatever I can conveniently borrow from my JoeQuake Launcher project and but still get it done fast. (Maybe diagnostics and map detect).

      3. Any Quake Launcher. One for general use with emphasis on JoeQuake/QRack, ProQuake, DarkPlaces and "any Quake" in general. Mid-level launcher (probably with diagnostics and map detect, maybe with server browser).

      4. JoeQuake Launcher w/phased in QRack support, the full monty.

The more graphical clients are nice, but ironically 3/4 of the things that make them look cool are things you want off when you are on a server.

The best example of this was Tremor, with the a great rocket explosion effect that looked cool (FuhQuake style I think) but couldn't be turned off and blinded you when you fired a rocket.
