  • Need abit of help with DarkPlaces!

    Hey everyone, need abit of help with some different issue's ive run into when trying to run DarkPlaces with certain pk3 files.

    Just to sketch out what i've downloaded, here's the list of stuff i found while browsing around for hours on the website, reading stuff and just having a blast.

    Installed:
    Quake from Steam
    DarkPlaces (newest build)
    QRP Textures & Addon
    Dpwater0.31
    id1_teleporter
    DP-New_Lava-v0.3-Seven
    effectinfo & particlefont (from Seven)
    Quake-HQ-Music
    HUD_id1_v4.71_Nahuel_Dresk_Smith + HUD+Menu-Seven

    And here's the problems i've run into:

    1) Setup: I havnt been able to find any solid infomation on what your supposed to do with a fresh install of Quake + Darkplaces! i assume there's some settings one would need to tinker with in the options menu & console outside the resolution? i read somewhere about some phallanx mapping (hope i spelled that right) and some RT world thingy.. its quite confusing to someone who has no clue what that means.

    2) Texture's missing from QRP: The 25point HealthPack & All the ammo crates seem does not seem to have a updated texture, is this normal? or is it an issue on my side? If its normal, can someone then attempt to explain how one could replace those textures with stuff from Rygel's high pack?

    3) A user called "BEEF34T3R" made and uploaded a skybox to filefront, now that skybox looks just amazing but unfortunetly the download link comes up dead, is there anyone who might have that skybox still that would mind reuploading it? link to the thread where he posted it 3 years ago: http://quakeone.com/forums/quake-hel...g-packs-5.html (its on page 5)

    4) I've read someone talk about something called DPMod that should have some sprites for tourches (the lightsources from the beginning of quake) what is DPMod? and what does it do? it isnt mentioned many places and googling it didnt yield many informative results.

    5) Seven's "Small Mod Complilation" i just cant make that work, i seem to have followed the direction given in the readme but regardless of what i try to do, the mods such as Ogre/Zombie aiming does not work as the ogre behind the bars in e1m3 keeps hitting the stairs. Does this mod complilation still work? if so.. is it just me thats an idiot?

      Hello Dybdal,

      Welcome to quakeone. It is always good to see new people who are interested in Quake.

      Regarding your problems:
      First of all, relax. We have emergency exits on the left and on the right.


      Handling different .pk3�s with replacement stuff is very difficult. Especially for beginners.
      You mentioned very old and new pk3�s in your post.
      Mixing them is not a good idea.
      Pk3�s often contain similar things that overwrite each other or produce new/more issues.

      So, you have the choice:
      1.) Walk down the easy path and use a carefully created ALL-IN-ONE package.
      2.) Do it all by yourself and face difficulties that you described above.

      These are the answers to your specific questions:
      (be ready for new ones after you go deeper into the cave)

      Your question 1:
      You do not need to do anything special.
      Extract the engine of choice into your Quake folder.
      Start Quake with your new engines executable.
      In-game options are similar to all other games that you know.
      Some engines have features, that you need to enable (default = disabled).
      You must do this often via cvar (console input, or modifying your config/autoexec).
      But this is only optionally !
      You do not need to do this to play Quake.

      Your question 2:
      Visit this page to learn more about it.
      You will see, that your mentioned health & ammo boxes textures are not inside the world texture pack.
      You need the items texture pack for those.

      Your question 3:

      Your question 4:
      dpmod is a Quake modification, that changes the gameplay and shows DarkPlaces features. It changes the original gameplay very much.
      If you are interested in the fire of dpmod, the "small mod compilation" (see also point 5) also has it included. So you do not need the dpmod.

      Your question 5:
      Yes, the "small mod compilation" is still working. I know its author personally.
      The "small mod compilation" in its default condition does not change the gameplay!
      It only makes some things here and there, which should make the game more fun and interesting. Some say it "looks better" due to some visual/sound effects. But that is a personal liking thing.
      This mod gives you the possibility to change/enable some features (just like your mentioned ogre aiming and some more). To do this, you need a file called autoexec.cfg in your ID1 folder.
      I do not want to explain more, because it is explained in detail in the readme.txt, that comes with it.
      These features can change the gameplay, therefore they are disabeld by default.


      Now, depending on which pill you chose, I wish you good luck and much fun with Quake.

        Allrighty.. tryed that relaxing thing.



        Didnt work..
        Ended up panic'ing knocking over the lights rendering the emergency exits impossible to locate and thus i ended up ..

        shall we say, tumbling down the rabbit hole?



        So after another night where the misses gracefully allowed me time to play with my new toys (a new pc)
        I read up some more.
        Made a ton of mistakes along the way.

        But in the end actualy made much of what i wanted to work, work.. YAY SUCCESS.



        And that leaves just one thing left to do and unfortunetly i just cant make it work and thats Skyboxes
        (thanks a ton for the re'up of the skyboxes from 3 years ago, your a champion Seven)

        1) Where is it the skyboxes are meant to be placed in the id1 folder? and does it require aditional mods/addons to function?

        2) How many skyboxes are there in the game? and is there a thread with user made skyboxes one could look though?

        .. and thats about it for now i think, oh by the way i figured out why your small mods compilation didnt work.
        It was caused by a mod called "quad" (adds quake3 style quad effect to your weapons)
        when both are in the Id1 folder, quad gets loaded but small mods thingy dosnt.

          1, Skyboxes should be into the id1/textures folder
          2, There are 2 skyboxes in ID1
          - sky1 (violett)
          - sky4 (blue)
          3, These are NOT skyboxes. I would call them Skytextures!

            Thank you webangel & seven, i think i've done everything i want in Quake for now..
            Been playing the game for the past 2-3 hours after fixing the violet skybox and been loving every second of it.

            After im done playing though SP Quake a few times over the next few days i'll def pop in again asking a few questions regarding the mission packs.
            Tinkering with this game is quite.. addicting.

              HAHA , I edited your post to compliment my wishful thinking, I was excited a new player would be arriving soon then I read MISSION PACKS (ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG)

                  Last night me and Gothic played @ rage for like, 1-2 hours nonstop PMODE.


                  When we left , Muller had 200+ points and Whit**** was salivating over "The Belt"

                    Hehe, i've actualy been active playing QW for years but time hasnt been available to put into it for a few years now. (allthough i do tend to play a few CPMA games in q3a from time to time)

                    Might be time to dust off the nQuake client and get a few games in during the weekend.
