  • DirectQ questions

    Hello Everyone!

I have a few questions, and I know you are the right people to ask

Been using DirectQ for a little while now for all my single player needs and the occasional co-op with my niece and nephew. It is an awesome engine that meets 99% of my Quaking needs, and looks good doing it. Thanks MH!

Here are the little gibs I am still trying to work out:

    1. After an hour or so of playing, my character will start sinking into world and taking damage, and the game becomes unplayable. A quick save and restart will fix this, so it is not a huge trouble in single player. It is a problem for co-op tho, having to exit and restart mid-slaughter.

    2. If a zombie throws his mutilated flesh at my face, and if said flesh hits face, the bloody gib will sit there mid air, in a very silly way. It is not necessarily "unquakelike" to be in a room of floating bloody gibs, but I do not remember it being this way originally.

    3. Any door or platform that moves into a wall/floor/ceiling (think secret doors) will still try to draw its texture in the world after it has moved into place (I think this is called a moving brush but idk). So i end up with a spot where there are 2 textures inhabiting the same place in the game world, and they scramble around as i adjust my view. As I move I can see the proper surface texture and the supposedly now hidden texture. I was thinking this might be a driver error... but I learned a long time ago about video driver bologna, and so I have a nice video card (gtx470 1280mb). Still i suspect it is some sort of genius on nvidias part...

    4. sndspeed cvars? I am using the mindgrind/qtest soundpack floating around and an ogg soundtrack. this plays fine but i get "little pops" once a minute or so. I tried adjusting snd_mixahead but no luck.

    5. Dang Travail keeps crashing when trying to load the next level! I am at the hidden slipgate in ep2, but as soon as DirectQ tries to load the secret level I am magically teleported back to my windows desktop Helpz?

    my machine:

    win7x64
    dual dualcore 3ghz amd fx-74
    8gb ram
    evga geforce 470gtx 1280mb
and of course, updated directx 9

Holy gee whiz, look at this book I've written I'm worn out.

1] Dont know but sounds relating to the person hosting the server.
    2]Lol never heard of this
    3]Sounds like Z-fighting
4]This could be the root of all your evl
    5]Never played Travail

You need 3 files and two folders to successfully run Q1.

    Quake\Directq.exe
    Quake\ID1\pak0.pak
    Quake\ID1\pak1.pak

As far as I know, ProQuake is the best Server EXE to run servers. (submitting now, finding link coming back and editing it in....)

Thanks Mindz for the thorough and friendly reply

      1. It happens in single player too, where there is no server, unless you mean "whatever computer is running the game."

      2. Oh yeah this is a real thing lol, I'll get a pic!

      3. Hmm, interesting. Do you suppose the solution is in the nvidia settings or my Quake .cfg?

      4. I've read something on the steam forums about changing "snd_mixahead" to solve playback issues, so I tried bumping it up from default "0.1" to "0.2" in hundredths but it didn't help. There is a note in the Mindgrind Audio pak about adjusting "sndspeed" but I don't see it in the DirectQ cvar list on the website. The console doesn't respond to any variations of the command I've attempted.

      5. I just started Travail a few days ago, and it is really cool so far! It is definitely commercial quality. I just fought through a huge library, a cave full of lunging spiders with poisonous venom and an awesome looking lava canyon with some of the best looking mountains I've seen in Quake, ever. This is why I've got to get to the next level!

ProQuake looks awesome. I'm primarily just playing 2-3 machine local games with DirectQ and hosting and playing at the same time. Maybe I need to find myself an old beige box and make it my dedicated server.

Off topic, but i see we have similar taste in pc hardware, although mine is not as fast lol!

Yes, even though you aren't connected to a server that someone else hosts, whichever client is doing the -listen or -dedicated hosting is the server.IE,if you fire up quake and start a multiplayer game, you're the server/host.

Nope, Z-Fighting is something we have all learned to live with, I believe someone awhile back figured out a FIX for it,but the fix unfortunately introduced more problems than it sovled... IIRC ( Z-fighting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia )

You probably should consider adjusting the frequency of your audio , as this sounds like the most probable issue I can think of... left click your volume indicator in the system tray , then click on MIXER, then the last tab should be
Advanced and contain a drop arrow with many choices availible. I can only recommend the setting I use, because I don't experience popping/cracking sounds during the playback of audio. 16-bit 48000Hz (DVD Quality)

I'm a firm believer in Price+Performance, and that definately means AMD. I used to run a Cyrix 6x86 back in the day, and when that wasn't sufficient I bought a Pentium-90 and OC'd to 100mhz..... ahh, the good ole days.

Well I am back with some progress!

Firstly I solved my weird audio issues. I read an old blogpost by MH about strange codecs and the hell they can unleash, and sure enough on 11/4/2009 I must've needed codecs for something bc there they were Anyway playback is great now, and I take all the blame

I managed to finish Travail; I only solved this one with dumb luck. This is odd so bear with me. Before having the problem changing levels I mentioned earlier, I had turned off fullbrights bc I'd noticed some weird bright pixels on certain textures and that's what you do under those circumstances. I saved my game and quit. DirectQ saved my config change. I loaded my save, mid-level, and proceeded to exit, discovering the aforementioned crash. Long story short, Travail crashes under DirectQ 1.9 when trying to load maps if fullbrights are disabled. I deleted my cfgs and it's the same. This only happens with Travail, and it is infinitely reproducible on my machine. Easy fix though, just leave on fullbrights

I tried to take pictures of zombie gibs, repeatedly, in multiple formats. As soon as there were sufficient gibs in view to amuse me, I opened the console and typed "screenshot screena". The console reported that it had written the file. A screenshot directory was created, but it remains empty regardless of how many attempts or with different format options

Last, but not least, having successfully Travailed I want to play Nehahra. Downloaded Spirit's repack from Quaddicted and placed the "nehahra" folder from that archive into my quakedir next to id1. I tried launching with commandline "directq.exe -nehahra -game nehehra" and I get the conback and updated menu, but the game crashes on my attempt to start. Doesn't seem to be affected by turning off fullbrights either.

          Any ideas? Maybe karma? Satan?

DirectQ may not support Nehahra. MH didn't seem very fond of the Nehahra code and wrote several blog entries on it.

Unless a DirectQ doc says it supports Nehahra, Nehahra support isn't an automatic.

Few engines support Nehahra which requires extra engine support: JoeQuake does JoeQuake Project Page . I can't say I know of another "for sure engine" .

There are some Bengt Jardrup Nehahra engines, but they don't have multi-core CPU clock fixes ... The Homepage of Bengt Jardrup

[Nehahra support in an engine is uncommon. The overwhelming majority of Quake engines do not support playing Nehahra with them.]
