  • Looking for help making a sound mod

    Hi Quake fans,

I need help being pointed in the right direction here. I'm a long time fan of Quake (very fond memories playing the original for hours back in 1997) and I want to make my very first mod. What I want to do seems pretty simple: I just want to replace the marine's voice sound effects with some personalized voices. I've never made a mod before, and I guess I'm looking for a good tutorial, or advice from someone who's done this type of mod before. I should mention that I'm using DarkPlaces to run Quake on my computer, if that matters.

    Thank you!

When you say "marine", do you mean the player? Or the soldier/enforcer?
Name's damage_inc, and killing is my business. Don't worry though, it's nothing personal! Oh wait... maybe it is

      No matter, here's the skinny

Inside your "quake" folder create a folder called "cholula" and inside that folder create another folder called "sound" then create either a folder called "soldier", "player" or "enforcer". Whichever represents your "marine".

      Ex:
      quake>cholula>sound>player

Now, inside the "player" folder you'd need files named as the originals you want to replace. I'll type that up, the file names, if you understand the first part

      Let me know.

EDIT: Here's a screen shot of the original "player" sound names:

        Sorry, I meant the player!

Yes, that makes perfect sense. Now, I have 2 folders here: C:\QUAKE, with just the ID1 folder, and C:\quakedp, where DarkPlaces, a copy of ID1 and all related files live. I'm assuming I'd need to created my custom Cholula folder in \quakedp?

I posted the list above ^^^

Yes, "C:\quakedp\cholula\sound\player", and in that directory is where your new sounds will go.

Then start quake with the "-game cholula" parameter and you're off and running

Thank you sooo much for the super fast replies and help! One more bit of hand-holding requested: How do I start the game with that (or any) parameter? Again, THANK YOU

Right click on the Darkplaces .exe and drag it a lil bit into "empty or "white" space", meaning do not drop it onto any other file or folder, in your quakedp directory. It should pop up with a "create shortcut here" option, yes!

Then right click again and chose properties, edit the "target" field(I think) like this: "C:\quakedp\darkplaces.exe" -game cholula then save.

You can also rename the shortcut "cholula mod" if you want to make it easier to remember. I'm not booted into win7 right now so my memory is a lil bit sketchy but that is about the jist of it

You're welcome, good luck. If you need more help just ask, everyone here's pretty damn helpful that's for sure!
