  • Server HELP

OK well i have got a old computer that i want to make a quake server so i can put the mods and get some experience in running a server. I am a total noob when it comes to stuff like this and i have already read the guide that baker made but as i said im a noob and need a little more help.

First i know about command lines but i was wondering what would be a good one :

Also i would like to set up a dns:

But the thing i get totally mess up on is the port forwarding and the firewall settings so on.

i have no idea what ports to open and i have on idea what to let through my firewall.

In a way its just going into huge detail form the post Baker.

Sorry to be a pain but i really want to get a server up and running so if anyone can help it would be gratefully appreciated

    King regards

Perhaps something along the lines of
    Code:
    wqpro.exe dedicated 8 noipx condebug heapsize 32768
    zone 1024 ip nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn port 26000 +map start
Where nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn is the IP number of your server.

The first question you might want to consider is have you got a static IP address or not. If you have then great this makes the job a lot easier, if you haven't then a dynamic DNS may be your best option.
If you want try your own domain perhaps try a freebie first and see how you go. I've used DynDNS.com: Free DNS Hosting, E-mail Delivery, and VPS Hosting in the past for Quake servers and never had a problem with it. You register, select a domain from their free list and enter in the IP details of the server you want to alias. As long as you renew it every thirty days, either by a 20 second operation on their web page or by installing an appropriate piece of software on a machine in your LAN that does the job for you that you should be fine

Hmmm Quake can be a bit of a pain for that as it uses lots of different ports not just 26000 or whatever port you set in your command line. I have seen instances in the past where admins have put a Quake server in a DMZ and configured a software firewall to give Quake permission to use whatever ports it needs. This is not the safest option but it did solve that particular Admin's problem given her firewall set up.
