  • Model Interpolation and Skyboxes

What exactly is model interpolation? Wikipedia describes interpolation as
In the mathematical subfield of numerical analysis, interpolation is a method of constructing new data points within the range of a discrete set of known data points.
So is model interpolation creating new frames for models based on previous and future frame positions; which is basically tweening. Did I just answer my own question?

Skyboxes: anyone have some screen shots of the skyboxes in WinQuake/GLQuake and skyboxes in engines such as FitzQuake, DarkPlaces or any other engines that make the sky look different?

Model interpolation makes the animations not look so jerky. The animations in Quake are something like 10 frames per second.

Skybox shot, not the most useful screenshot, but here is one. (Is this what you wanted?)

Qrack has a heavily modified sky option. Not sure how to describe it, really.

Okay. I answered my own question.

I take it that shot is from Qrack? I'll have to see what the difference is between a couple of different engines is for some maps.

        That's probably a FitzQuake screenshot.

Qrack's sky is different. A screenshot couldn't explain it because it is animated.

Like Baker said, model interpolation fills in "dummy" animations between the default 10 FPS of standard Quake animations. There's another kind of interpolation which is positional/roation, but it's not as big a deal. For skyboxes, look at Quake 2.

            I know, it's tweening with a different name. :p

            I'll check it out, thanks.

The optional skyscroll used in Qrack was totally written by MH himself
It basically removes all old sky polygons, wraps a sphere around the map, uses a zfail method to only show visible portions, then rotates the texture constrained to the remaining portion of the sphere, or something like that iirc, it's been a few years
