I see Baker's whitelist idea as bringing the end of Quake.
Seriously, all that needs to be done to solve the kimp problem is give a few trustworthy regular players that aren't total idiots admin privledges. If Kimp comes on, ban that IP. When he comes back, ban him again. Share banlists between servers, so that any IP Kimp uses on any server gets banned from ALL the servers.
I agree with this...
Password protecting the servers doesn't resurrect anything.. Kimp should change for the community, not the community change for kimp.
Add vote-kick/vote-ban and let the players control the server, the majority rules so if someones getting kicked/banned its probably for a decent reason.

umm irc has been around since what 96-97? we're all old farts. IRC, would be the easiest way to ensure passwords are given to the Quakers. Everyone has to auth thru gamesurge to even get operator status in channels. Or maybe implement some type of password for the accounts and then somehow password control it to a server? Is that even possible, would require some type of database im sure. OR..SOLUTION...BAN KIMP FOR LIFE.
This body holding me,reminds me of my own mortality.
Embrace this moment, remember, we are eternal, all this pain is an illusion.

Well it's nice to see us old farts are in good company. You're right in that there are a number of methods one could use for the dissemination of passwords. Personally I just used an email which worked well for my simple needs, but hey whatever works well for the admins
Note that I didn't mention any players specifically, but if that mechanism for preventing disruptive players from ruining your game is freely available and working out well for you then of course you should stick with it.

I whole heartedly agree. In the ideal world a disruptive player really should adjust their unacceptable behavior to what is more socially acceptable for rest of the community as a whole. I wasn't trying to "resurrect" anything though my friend, this was merely a well intended intended sharing of a helpful temporary alternative [that already exists within Proquake] for those experiencing such problems with no immediate means of remedying it themselves.

Remember when players could vote-kick? I do.
Yes, actually vote-kick is still there just disabled. But take Kimp for example, he sees two players he hates playing a one on one, then he connects 4 clients to it, vote-ban "yes" with all 4 clients, then the unsuspecting player gets banned.
then he silently slips back into the abyss and there's one player left scratching his head.
I still like the old school method, like a BBS, where u had to log in, username & password, (which was primarily authorized via EMAIL).
Thanks for taking the time to post Rook. That would be an interesting development of the same idea whilst still retaining it's overall simplicity. Also the example you gave does tend to highlight a vulnerability of the vote method. Without giving too much away in an open forum, would you happen to know if there are any such vulnerabilities in the password method? The whole premise is dependant on ppl not leaking passwords but I'd be interested to hear your opinion as someone who has a significant knowledge of the quake code.
[I'm sure you know what's coming next...] Just out of interest does Qrack support the proquake password feature? If not, is it on your ever increasing to do list?
