  • Hosting on linux vs windows

Back in the 90's it was always best to host a dedicated server on a linux machine, but I was wondering if that is still the case now.

I have both Linux and Win, I prefer to host on Linux however, but I have no idea what is the best server software to run. It's been almost a decade or more since I ran a server, and it was always qwserver on Windows for me.

I heard somethign about SQserver and people still using Proquake, but coming back from such a long time away, I feel a bit overwhelmed at all the new client/server possibilities, and I'd appreciate a little steer in the right direction.

I'd be mostly running this dedicated server for people I know that live in a couple different parts of the US. So it won't be just for LAN use.

You'd probably want to use a Quakeworld server on a home connection, NetQuake isn't thin-pipe friendly and not suprisingly the majority of NQ servers are hosted on pro-gaming servers.

Quakeworld questions can best be handled at quakeworld.nu where you can get the best answer to really technical stuff like Quakeworld server setup.
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

      Thank you for the reply.

So it looks like I'll be going to use MVDSV server/nQuake client then

I was hoping I could just get right back into Proquake, since that is more familiar for me at the moment.

Yup, ProQuake is quite a capable server.
