  • New (super experimental) server: FoQ's Universal--fvf.servequake.com:26002

I set up an experimental universal server on port 26002 of fvf.servequake.com. The general premise is to have proquake 4.51 rigged up with a bunch of batch files that execute a series of commands that shut down the server, change the gamedir, and "respawn" the server using the map command. I wouldn't call it stable, Rquake crashed on me, not sure why though... seemed to work fine after some more playtesting.

As it stands, only someone with rcon access can change the mod. I have it rigged up to support Slide, Travail, Rquake and vanilla ID1... all things I want to host, but I would rather not have like 6 servers running. Right now the server is in Rquake mode.

Running Darkplaces server now (anyone can connect still). It used to be super unstable, crashing at the start of any map other than intro... but the stability issues seem to have sorted themselves out. I played some ultra-huge maps with a couple other people and it didn't break, so it should work.

//It should be running Rquake most of the time, but I'll be playing Travail on it with some buddies from time to time... it has Slide too, but I don't see that getting much attention.

      Hi Foq,

I thought I'd give it a test late last night but unfortunately after around 37 frags (at roughly around 12am GMT) it disconnected me. It's probably nothing, or some fault this end but I thought I'd mention it in case it helps.

It's nice to see a little variation from dm3 and I do like the idea a single server offering different voteable mods. I recall Baker was working on a very similar concept relatively recently which may prove invaluable in delivering this, and make your job a little easier as an admin

      Kind regards

        37 frags on what?

It seems I've got it to be stable. I've playtested it in some super-gigantic maps in Rquake and Travail. I can't make it crash, even if I try. It seems the dpserver needs to have the autoexec executed twice to not crash for whatever reason on certian mods... but my funky gamedir setup takes care of that.

You may have connected when the server was running Proquake. It's Darkplaces now. If you were in Rquake, it's no suprise that it broke, as Rquake tends to break regular Proquake servers... need that modified exe to run it (or darkplaces, apparenetly).

I've got ideas that would work to make it playable without an admin around, but not the skills (mapping, coding, texture making...). We would also need the source code for a few things, as a vote command would need to be implimented in each mod to work.
