  • is it legal, let alone possible?

It seems that all the puzzle/surf/minigame or other random silly maps can only be found in valve games. I know I can load goldsrc engine maps with most modern engines, but they don't have all the features that I would want. For example, I tried to do surf maps on ezquake, darkplaces, and fteqw with OZTF 1.46 and the texture wads (i own half life goldsrc and counter strike 1.6, btw) and I while I can slide, I can't seem to get the momentum needed for the jumps. First off, are there any mods out there that have full compatibility with the various hlbsp maps? Another thing I would like to point out is the lack of replacement textures for the cs 1.6 and hl .wad files. Why not use the goldsrc engine for these maps, you ask? Because of one word: Portability. Not everybody can use wine to get the maps to work. Besides, with the quake engines open source, It is totally possible to port the game to another platform. Plus, if there is a quake mod with full compatibility with these maps, people who's comps can't use the goldsrc engine even though they are running windows will have another opportunity to play them. I'm probably not going to do this... because it would take a lot of work. There is open arena for quake 3, arguibly nexuiz/open quartz for quake 1, what should take half-life's place? I know quake-life exists, but that is for single-player compatibility, let alone not being complete. Just a thought...

first, let me remind you this is a QuakeOne forum, and appears you've covered a ton of questions that only a very very VERY small portion of us will know the answer's to.

There has been little to none when it comes to cross platforming Game A content onto game B's engine. I'm sure some people have done this for their own purposes, but releasing such things would entice an ass woopin, from the "Game A : Content" copyright/trademark owner's product showing up in foreign territory.

As much as your post makes no sense,I'm wondering if your a bot now. HRM

Well from what I read and made (maybe) sense of.

There are no HLBsp "mods" that I know of. It is entirely possible to do this as you mentioned but would require editing MANY bsp files. HL spmaps are split up so much (check the pak file). As for CS or HL-DM maps they could be ported but would require alot of editing of either the BSP to make the entities Quake equals OR to make your own progs.dat to add in the features of the map (which would be more work).
As for it being legal - no it wouldn't be. It would be the same as me taking all the Gears of War 2 maps and releasing them to be used in Quake 4.
As for people with PC's who can't run Half-Life (goldsrc)? Umm...... my old 133 ran HL1. Mind you loading times were HORRIBLE making Single Player more loadscreen than playing - but once it loaded. It was quite playable. It's now 2010 - you can litteraly go to a Library and buy on of their old PC's for $50 and it will run HL1 smoothly. HL1 requirements are not alot more than Q1 in reality. Yes the numbers look alot bigger but not really - so making a mod to bring HL1 maps to Q1 is kinda.....pointless. Due to amount of work and how at least 80% of the computer community today will have a PC that will run HL1. For heavy gamers (aka ones that would actually care for this mod) - I'd say 95% of them would have a PC that could run HL1 maps in HL1.
