  • Breaking up the z-fight

Ok, so I've decided to go through all the quake maps and fix every instance of z-fighting, and if I'm feeling really ballsy, fix all these bugs.

After trying out a few different map editors I feel Worldcraft 3.3 with QuakeAdapter is good for me because it's easy to figure out and it's easy to compile the map (BSP was being a real pain in my ass).

So, after 20 minutes of fiddling around with the map sources I just received I've made progress.

Behold, the infamous Quad lift in E1M1.

    Isn't it beautiful?

Now, for some reason all the doors and switches on the map have misaligned textures. Is this a common thing with Worldcraft? Is there a simple fix or do I need to go to every door and switch on the map and realign every texture? How do I do that?

If anyone has any suggestions or advice please feel free to share it. This is my very first taste of map editing so I'm going to need all the help I can get...that is of course unless someone else wants to do this instead!

I remember Moon[Drunk] had the same issue earlier, and it was fixed after he asked at func_msgboard. Perhaps do a search on that site (google lets you do site specific searches if you add "site:celephais.net" or something like that to the search bar).

Maybe Moon will answer this, though.

Personally if I were to do this, I'd also take the opportunity to re-light the maps with a modern light tool, maybe add coloured lights, add sunlight the same way, and compile for transparent water...

I had a similar issue in WorldCraft but all textures were more or less misaligned for me!

What RickyT23 suggested in #11481 worked for me though!

Now I moved over to GTKRadiant instead

        Ah! Thank you!

I notice WC1.6a won't install on Win7, I guess I'll have to do a little VMWare action when I get off work...

I tried GTKRadiant but was encountering some texture issues that I didn't feel like beginning to resolve. Worldcraft is the only one that seemed to work out of the box.

My sole goal is to eradicate z-fighting...the quickest, most effective path is the one I want to tread.

In response to golden_boy: Adding all that fancy stuff would be biting off more than I can even think about chewing. I'm somewhat of a purist anyway...I love WinQuake. I just started using DirectQ and now I'm in nerd heaven. Just z-fighting is killing by buzz.

So, that fix worked like a charm. Everything is as it should be.

Of course I've encountered another issue. I fixed e1m1 and compiled it, but for some reason the light and shadows are low res. Here is what I mean: The original and the fixed one.

Is there something I need to specify somewhere, I'm sure this is due to my total lack of knowledge on the subject, would you please educate me?

            I found this in LIGHT.LOG

            Options:
-soft [n] Enable soft lighting (reduce jagged shadows)

I guess I need to find where I can configure this...

Only people who don't do anything don't have any questions. It is the nature of playing around with Quake.

Around 2005, I started messing around with mapping and I had a ton of questions at first.

                  I appreciate that

I just need to get over myself a little as I've already accumulated quite the list of things I want to know...

Well here it is boys, my first successfully z-fixed and compiled map...bask in its sheer beauty.

Now all I need to do is run through quake, SoA and DoE and hunt down every instance of z-fighting and BAM, done! MUAHAHA!

                        Nice, keep doing it.

The fixed maps could just be included in engine downloads, to fix z-fighting for real.
