  • Quake 1 modeling help

I am looking for a good tutorial for modeling animated quake 1 .mdl files in any free modeling program (gmax, blender, etc.) A couple of years ago, there was a thread on these forms (http://quakeone.com/forums/quake-hel...-tutorial.html) that used to have a link to a tutorial for gmax, but the link is now bad. Also, I can't seem to find any quake .mdl exporter for a modern version of blender or the gmax help files.

See this thread I just posted the plugins you will need for Blender. Gmax is not free.at least
I dont think the plugins are.
As for animation there are tons of tuts on youtube for Blender.I Like Ira Krakow's material in particular. Also I like the 3D-palace.'s videos because they cover more than blender,as I have 3DSMAX as well ,good luck

You don't need a software specific tutorial. It's all the same stuff over and over. Extrude face is extrude face no matter what you use. You need to learn whatever program you want to use first. Then you can export models in whatever format you want.

On top of that, all you have to know is there is no armature in an .mdl file. You will have to do all the animating with shapes. However, I think most engines support newer model formats and I'm sure you can use an armature with at least one of 'em. I have never looked into this so, it's a complete assumption.

There is an .mdl exporter for blender 2.49b. I know that is not the latest blender, but you want to make Quake models (not a Disney movie). Blender 2.49b has everything under the hood to get the job done.

I just posted the plugins you will need for Blender.
You use more than one plugin? If so, what are you using (blender ver) and what do your plugins do?

edit: posted where? There is no link in your post.

I guess I didn't make myself clear in the first post. What I really wanted was a tutorial on how to export animated models from a model editor like blender into .mdl format, not a tutorial on how to actually model.

            Sorry I missed the link

You will need these to get started if I understand what you want is to export directly from 1 editor.
If you are wanting to just get the job done the easiest fastest way well then that is something else.Have a look at Noesis Seor Casaroja's Engineering Oasis
Of special note is the animlist ability to save animations from one model to another.
See here some discussion on that:Inside3d Forums • View topic - News - Model converter with extensive Quake support
            @ Madgypsy
            I use 2.49b
As for my plugins ,There not mine I don't write any plugins.See the links for details.
I do have one custom script that takes skeletal animations and auto assigns shape keys to keyframes from those for mdl backporting. But it is recent and untested, look at my lil naked dude work for the script if your interested.

Thanks for the reply! That Noesis converter seems to have solved all of my problems with exporting models to quake and will probably come in handy for many other applications as well.
