I did make many different replacements to this model and none I was satisfied with. They either strayed TOO much from the original or just looked bad. So figured I'd try to make a Vore projectile based vengeance sphere. The initial idea was this with a ball around it. I did a nice shader version, however it again looked bad as it was a sphere. I wanted something better, so dropped the ball and just used the projectile and applied some flags to it (Death Knight Effect and Rotating) and if used with Seven's effectinfo.txt it looks awesome.
This does obviously stray away from the original design, however just think of it as a Spikey Vengeance Sphere
To test, simply boot up "start" with "deathmatch 1" and take the Nightmare gateway. It will take you into the room with the Sphere. For easy access to the room, also have "teamplay 4" set. This will set it to CTF mode so you can just use the Grappling Hook to get into the room
